The USS Carney (DDG-64) is a destroyer of Arleigh Burke class . The United States Navy named the ship after Admiral Robert Carney , who was Chief of Naval Operations under President Eisenhower .
history
The United States Navy commissioned DDG-64 in 1991. The destroyer was laid down at Bath Iron Works in August 1993 and launched in July of the following year. The ship's godmother was Betty Tausig, the admiral's daughter. Official commissioning was on April 13, 1996.
The Carney made her first voyage in 1997/1998 with the carrier USS George Washington (CVN-73) , in 1999 she moved to the Mediterranean for exercises. In 2002 she conducted exercises off Puerto Rico , her partner was the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) . in the same year the Carney took part in Operation Enduring Freedom . Meanwhile, on June 10, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld came on board in Manama , Bahrain.
In 2006 the destroyer took part in the UNITAS and PANAMAX exercises, and in 2007 it was relocated as part of Maritime Security Operations as an escort for the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) . In early 2010, the Carney ran alongside the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) . The destination of the trip is the Middle East, where the combat group supports the US forces in Iraq and the fight against pirates off Somalia . In the summer of 2011, the destroyer sailed for three months in the Mediterranean.
