The USS Halsey (DDG-97) is a destroyer in the United States Navy and belongs to the Arleigh Burke class . It is named after Naval Admiral William F. Halsey .

history

The Halsey was commissioned by Ingalls Shipbuilding in 1998 and laid down there in early 2002. After two years in dry dock, the ship was launched in 2004. After the final equipment, the Halsey was put into service in mid-2005.

The Halsey passed through the Panama Canal and reached its home base in San Diego , California . The destroyer spent the rest of the year with shooting training and test drives. At the beginning of 2006, the post shakedown availability followed , a shipyard layover during which the last problems were resolved. This took place at the BAE Shipyard in San Diego. On August 4, 2006, the Halsey began her first laying, which she led over Pearl Harbor in the Western Pacific. In May 2008, the destroyer deployed alongside the USS Peleliu (LHA-5) in the Western Pacific. In September 2010, the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) was deployed to the Pacific and the Persian Gulf. In late 2011, the destroyer moved alongside the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) in Asian waters.

Armament

For defense against approaching missiles, the ship received the RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) anti - aircraft missiles, which are fired from the Vertical Launching System . For further air defense, a close-in-weapon system in the form of the Phalanx MK 15 RAM was subsequently installed behind the aft chimney structure , which was not originally intended for construction from DDG 85 (Block IV).

Others

The ship plays a central role in the US television series The Last Ship , where it represents the fictional destroyer "USS Nathan James".
