The USS James E. Williams (DDG-95) is a destroyer of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer . The United States Navy ship is named for Petty Officer 1st Class James E. Williams , the most decorated man in the Navy who never reached the officer degree.

history

Construction of the DDG-95 began in 1998 when the ship was authorized and placed with Ingalls Shipbuilding . There the destroyer was laid down in 2002, launching and christening took place in June 2003. The Williams was officially added to the fleet at the end of 2004.

The first mission of the James E. Williams took place in 2006 and led the ship to combat piracy off the coast of Somalia . In 2007, the destroyer laid with three of its sister ships as well as the USS Gettysburg (CG-64) and the USS Philadelphia (SSN-690) as an escort for the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN-65) as part of the war on terror of the United Forces States . During this mission, the Williams was added to a hijacking of the North Korean cargo ship Dai Hong Dan . After the Williams asked the pirates aboard the freighter to lay down their arms, the North Koreans attacked the pirates on the bridge. Two pirates were killed in the battle and five were captured injured. The three wounded North Koreans were treated on the Williams .

In 2009, the James E. Williams moved as part of the combat group around the USS Bataan (LHD-5) towards the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf. In July 2011, the destroyer took part in the multinational exercise FRUKUS . With the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) , the destroyer moved in 2012 towards the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean.

Armament

For defense against approaching missiles, the ship received the RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) anti - aircraft missiles, which are fired from the Vertical Launching System . For further air defense, a close-in-weapon system in the form of the Phalanx MK 15 RAM was subsequently installed behind the aft chimney structure in 2010 , which was not originally intended for construction from DDG 85 (Block IV).
