The Lower Castle , also called Schlössle , is a privately owned castle in the Bavarian spa town of Bad Grönenbach in the Swabian district of Unterallgäu . It stands at an altitude of 718 meters above sea level .

history

The Lower Castle was built in 1563 by the four brothers Konrad , Wolfgang , Christoph and Philipp von Pappenheim and was intended as a widow's seat for the von Pappenheim .

After Philipp von Pappenheim's death in 1619, his widow Anna von Winneberg lived there . Since the Calvinist faith introduced by Philipp von Pappenheim in Bad Grönenbach was to be suppressed again, his widow continued to hold sermons and Bible studies in the Lower Castle until 1626 by the Reformed preacher Adolf Langhans.

In the 17th century local officials, including Georg Weidlin, lived in the Lower Castle. In 1692/95 the castle passed to the prince monastery of Kempten . From that time on, officials were housed there. In the course of secularization in 1803, the property was confiscated and became the property of the Bavarian state. When it came to the farmer and landowner Josef Spatz, the castle went into private ownership. Since then it has changed hands several times.

Above the entrance there is a plaque with a coat of arms and the following inscription:

When one counts 1563 year, this house was built to Lieb, Jungfrau "Walburg" von Pappenheim by her cousins the four brothers, secretly Conrad, Wolf, Christof and Philippen, who protect God from misfortune.
