By provincial law No. 7203 it received the status of a vila, lost this again in 1933 when it became a district of Itapecuru-Mirim , but on May 15, 1935 the vila status was again declared. Vargem Grande had become a hub of the cattle drive of Caxias and Itapecuru-Mirim and had developed into a center of agriculture and ranching itself. By decree No. 45 of March 29, 1938, Vargem Grand received town rights as a municipality. The municipal boundaries were published again on December 31, 1948, after the previous district of Vargem Grande de Curuzu had become its own city. Vargem Grande consists of the main town with several named bairros (small districts) and a district.
