history
The first settlements go back to 1833, the center of the settlement is the village of Vila do Manga do Iguará from 1835. In 1840 it was also a military camp. By provincial law No. 7203 it received the status of a vila, lost this again in 1933 when it became a district of Itapecuru-Mirim , but on May 15, 1935 the vila status was again declared. Vargem Grande had become a hub of the cattle drive of Caxias and Itapecuru-Mirim and had developed into a center of agriculture and ranching itself. By decree No. 45 of March 29, 1938, Vargem Grand received town rights as a municipality. The municipal boundaries were published again on December 31, 1948, after the previous district of Vargem Grande de Curuzu had become its own city. Vargem Grande consists of the main town with several named bairros (small districts) and a district.
Local government
The executive rests with the city prefect (mayor). In the local elections in 2016 , Jose Carlos de Oliveira Barros of the left Partido Comunista do Brasil (PCdoB) was elected city prefect for the term from 2017 to 2020.
The legislature lies with a 13-member elected city council, the vereadores of the Câmara Municipal.
