Legal conflicts

Due to a complaint from the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) for breach of secrecy, the public prosecutor took action against the publisher in autumn 1998: They arranged for the memoirs of Hansjoachim Tiedge to be confiscated . The former defense chief of the BfV, who currently lives in Moscow and who converted to the GDR in 1985, had published his memoirs The Defector - a life confession in the publishing house Das Neue Berlin. The police not only blocked further deliveries by a Bielefeld company, but also visited around 700 bookstores nationwide that already had Tiedge's book on sale and confiscated the books there, and in some places they asked for customer addresses to be handed over. The Mitteldeutsche Zeitung reported on October 9, 1998 that two days earlier two police officers had also appeared at the publisher's stand at the Frankfurt Book Fair and confiscated the inspection copies. In March 1999, the Berlin public prosecutor brought charges. The trial before the Berlin regional court, which was scheduled for three days, ended ahead of time. On January 21, 2000, the Berliner Tagesspiegel reported : “In the end, even the public prosecutor's office demanded an acquittal.” And the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung wrote on the same day: The three high-ranking officials of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, who were considered by the 37th Large Criminal Court in Moabit Witnesses had appeared, with their "general statements, did not provide anything worthy of evidence of an accomplished betrayal of secrets or aiding and abetting".

At the beginning of 2011, the former Stasi prisoner and employee of the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial, Mario Röllig, won a lawsuit against the publisher for false allegations of fact and for the unauthorized use of a photo of him in a book by former Stasi employees Herbert Kierstein and Gotthold Schramm . During the negotiation, the publisher issued declarations of cease and desist regarding the false quotations and the unauthorized publication of photos. He undertook to delete the disputed passages under threat of a fine and not to distribute the photo any more.
