The Vestre Kirkegård ( German Westfriedhof ) is a cemetery in the Danish capital Copenhagen . It is located in the middle of the districts of Sydhavnen and Vesterbro and the district of Valby .
history
The complex was inaugurated on November 2, 1870 and, with around 54 hectares, is the largest grave complex in the country. The cemetery became necessary to cope with the increasing number of burials in the city. Until then, the assistance cemetery , established in 1760, was the city's main cemetery, but over time it reached its limits. The complex was designed by Hans Jørgen Holm, an architect in the Copenhagen Funeral Service, in collaboration with the landscape architect Edvard Glæsel and the city planner Charles Ambt, who was responsible for the overall planning. At first, the Westfriedhof was a burial place for poor people. In the 1990s it became the main cemetery in the Danish capital.
