Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (GTA: VCS for short) is the eighth game in the Grand Theft Auto series. The sequel to Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories was released for PSP on October 30, 2006 in North America and on November 10, 2006 in Europe . The release for the PlayStation 2 took place on March 9, 2007. The game takes place in 1984 two years before the events in GTA: Vice City . The character Victor "Vic" Vance is the brother of Lance Vance, who is known from GTA: Vice City. The EU version of the game was indexed for PlayStation 2 in November 2007 by the Federal Testing Agency for Media Harmful to Young People , but it was deleted again in October 2015.

action

Vice City in 1984: Victor Vance is a soldier at the beginning of the game and does some minor and criminal activities for his superior Sergeant Jerry Martinez. These become his undoing when he and a prostitute, whom he was supposed to pick up for the sergeant, are stopped in the car at the entrance to the barracks and drugs were discovered under his bed that Vic was supposed to hide for Martinez. Dishonorably discharged from the army, he initially carried out other illegal activities for another client.

With the murder of another client named Marty J. Williams, he finally takes on his business and from now on builds his own empire with his brother Lance, which is based on business activities such as extortion , prostitution , smuggling (in the game actually cocaine smuggling ), drug trafficking , Robbery etc. builds up.

After taking over several businesses in the city, the Vance brothers ambush a drug deal between Martinez's men and the Mendez brothers, Diego and Armando, leaders of the most powerful cocaine cartel, Vice City, and steal their vans. During a spectacular chase, the Vance brothers make it to the eastern island of Vice City. Vic and Lance then decide to work for the Mendez brothers and continue to expand their influence. At first it seemed like the Mendez brothers wanted an alliance with the Vance brothers, but it turns out differently. The Mendez brothers offer a deal: Lance and Victor will hand over all operations to them or they will be killed. Victor loudly refuses, and there are several kidnappings and bloody skirmishes. Vic eventually kills Armando Mendez. In the final, he kills Martinez and Diego Mendez in a showdown. With their drug money, the Vance brothers leave Vice City for a short time.

In the plot there are various other clients in between, including a few acquaintances from GTA: Vice City .

Gameplay

General

The game mainly consists of a combination of shooting and driving sequences. The tasks for the player can be divided into three categories: main missions, side missions and free play.

Both in the missions and outside the missions, the police react to criminal acts committed by the player. The more crimes the player commits, the more police officers and other units will pursue the player.

The main missions make up the plot of the game and therefore have a chronological order. To do this, the player has to visit various clients in the game world. In the following short cutscene the plot is continued and the problem to be solved is described. The player then has to solve the mission with weapons and / or vehicles that he finds in the game world or has already found. The main missions are simpler than its predecessor, as the game was only released for the PlayStation Portable and therefore had to be playable “in between”, similar to GTA: Liberty City Stories . This becomes apparent in the length of the missions and in the ease with which enemy vehicles or people can be eliminated.

Unlike its predecessors, GTA: VCS makes it possible to get all lost weapons back after an arrest or hospital stay. To do this, however, the player must pay a larger sum in front of the police station or hospital. In addition, the game offers the possibility to skip the first journey within a mission if a mission is started a second time.

The character is able to swim for a limited time, but not to dive. However, in contrast to GTA: SA, it is not possible to enter restricted areas, as these areas are also surrounded by invisible barriers in the water. As in the predecessor, the character's clothes can be changed in the hiding place.

You can buy shops or the property of a business as real estate, but in contrast to GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas you can no longer purchase additional hiding spots. Instead, the player is given a few hiding spots in the course of the game, as in GTA: Liberty City Stories .

Side missions

Side missions are not part of the plot and can therefore be performed at any time. The usual collection action this time consists of shooting 99 red balloons (in reference to the 80s hit 99 balloons by Nena ). Another type of mission, monster stunts, requires the implementation of long jumps with vehicles. Both types of missions do not need to be fully completed and can therefore be interrupted and continued later. Other missions, on the other hand, such as the fire service, police or ambulance missions, cannot be interrupted. There must be a certain number of the same tasks, such as B. extinguishing fires or killing criminals can be carried out.

Building an empire

Similar to GTA: Vice City, stores can be taken over. The shops initially offer the advantage that the game can be saved there. In addition, money can be earned by expanding the business.

To take over a business, the current protectors from a gang (similar to the game The Godfather ) must be attacked and killed. The interior also has to be destroyed by the player. Then the business field and the size of the business can be determined, whereby the expansion costs money. Depending on the size, business area and location of the business, the player receives different amounts of income every day, which is added directly to the player's account (in contrast to the earlier parts, where you had to collect the money yourself at the company). A certain number of special missions can be carried out for each business. If these missions are carried out, this has an increasing effect on the player's "reputation" and thus on the income.

Shops are attacked by opposing gangs and must be defended by the player. The process of this procedure is similar to the gang wars from GTA: San Andreas.

Others

The game follows the open world principle , and therefore the player is not forced to turn to the missions. The game world offers various employment opportunities. For example, the player may intentionally commit crimes to obtain police pursuit or just to explore the game world.

The city itself is the same as that seen in the game GTA: Vice City. Since the plot takes place before GTA: Vice City, some details have been changed. For example, the car dealership "Sunshine Autos" is still a small business and the branch known from GTA: Vice City is still under construction. The same applies to the villa from GTA: Vice City: Here a wing of the building and the garden are not yet finished. As usual in the series, the city is not fully unlocked at first.

Compared to its direct predecessor, GTA: Liberty City Stories, there are some new vehicles such as helicopters, jet skis and BMX bikes. In addition, the player can buy special vehicles directly in the hideouts, such as B. a bulletproof motorcycle or a helicopter. As with GTA: Vice City, which is set in the same city, there are no rolling stock.

occupation

There are a few songs by and with Phil Collins in the soundtrack . The song " In the Air Tonight " is available in full length as a live performance in the game. The performance corresponds to the real performance of Phil Collins. He himself is also present in some missions. Therefore he gives his character his own voice.

All other speakers listed, except for Dorian Missick as Victor 'Vic' Vance, have already appeared with their roles in GTA: Vice City .

Radio station

As in all other GTA parts, the soundtrack is played in the form of radio stations, with almost the same radio stations as in GTA: Vice City . In addition, there are three other new radio stations ( Fresh 105 FM , Paradise FM , VCFL ), which two years later no longer exist or were replaced in the game story of GTA: VC.

As in the predecessor GTA: VC songs from the 80s are played.
