Vira (Gambarogno) is a district of the municipality Gambarogno in the district of the same name , district Locarno , in the Swiss canton of Ticino . It formed an independent political community until April 24, 2010 .
geography
The village is located on the northeastern bank of Lake Maggiore at the foot of the 1738 m high mountain Gambarogno. From Vira a path leads south to the 1395 m high mountain pass Alpe di Neggia , which forms a connection to the Veddasca valley . The village is on the Cadenazzo – Luino line of the Swiss Federal Railways .
history
The area was settled early on, as evidenced by a stele found here with a North Etruscan inscription. In the Middle Ages, Vira was initially the center of the Gambarogno neighborhood, until it was replaced as such by San Nazarro in the 13th century . The village is first mentioned in 1305 as Vira . In 1516 it came under federal rule.
On November 25, 2007, the merger of the municipalities on the southern shore of Lake Maggiore to form the new municipality of Gambarogno was approved by the voters of the municipalities of Caviano , Contone , Gerra (Gambarogno) , Indemini , Magadino , Piazzogna , Sant'Abbondio and Vira (Gambarogno). Only San Nazzaro was mostly against it. An appeal was lodged with the Federal Supreme Court against the decision of the Ticino Grand Council to carry out the merger as planned. After the complaint was rejected, the merger took effect on April 25, 2010.
