The “ Great Wachaufzug Unter den Linden ” in Berlin was a military ritual of honor that the Prussian Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 1 carried out for the first time on September 18, 1818 on the occasion of Tsar Alexander I's visit .

Until German reunification in 1990, two soldiers from the Friedrich Engels Guard Regiment stood as honor guards in front of the Neue Wache during the day . Every Wednesday and Saturday at 2:30 p.m., an honorary formation from the GDR Guard Regiment pulled up to the “Great Guard Elevator”.

Since the day of national mourning in 1993, the Neue Wache has served as the central memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany for the victims of war and tyranny. On the day of popular mourning, the guard battalion at the Federal Ministry of Defense will provide an honor guard for the building.
