The incomplete list of elections and referendums here took place in the year 2000 or were scheduled for the date indicated.
Far from all of the elections listed here were conducted according to internationally recognized democratic standards. It also includes sham elections in dictatorships without alternative candidates or elections whose results were achieved through massive electoral fraud or without fair, equal access of the competing candidates or parties to the mass media .
Due to the large number of elections that are held worldwide each year, the list cannot claim to be exhaustive. In any case, the aim is to list all elections of at least national importance:
Africa
- On 27 February and 19 March, was the presidential election in Senegal in 2000 instead
- The parliamentary elections in Ethiopia 2000 took place between May and August .
- The Ivory Coast 2000 presidential elections took place on October 22nd .
- The parliamentary elections in Egypt 2000 took place between October 18 and November 8 .
- The presidential elections in Ghana 2000 took place on December 7th .
- The parliamentary elections in Ghana 2000 took place on December 7th .
- The parliamentary elections in Ivory Coast 2000/2001 took place on December 10, 2000 and January 14, 2001 .
America
- May 14: Local elections in Uruguay 2000
- July 30th: Presidential election in Venezuela. Hugo Chávez was confirmed as president with almost 60% of the votes cast (see English Wikipedia )
- November 7th:
- US presidential election ( George W. Bush won just ahead of Al Gore )

- Azerbaijan: parliamentary election
- Hong Kong: legislative election
- Iran: general election
- Japan: Shūgiin election
- Kyrgyzstan: presidential election

- Sri Lanka: general election
- Syria: one month after the death of his father , Bashar al-Assad is elected president by referendum with 97.29% of the vote.

- The referendum on the introduction of the euro took place on September 28th . ( en )

- The state elections in Schleswig-Holstein in 2000 took place on February 27th .
- The state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2000 took place on May 14th .
Finland
- On January 16 and February 6, the 2000 Finland presidential election took place.
France
- September 24: Referendum on whether the term of office of the French President should be shortened from seven to five years, see Septennat (France) and French Wikipedia
Greece
- On April 8, 2000 , the general election in Greece took place.
Lithuania
- The parliamentary elections in Lithuania took place on October 8, 2000 .
Austria
- The state elections in Styria 2000 took place on October 15th .
- The state elections in Burgenland 2000 took place on December 3rd .
Poland
- Poland's 2000 presidential election took place on October 8th .
Romania
- The 2000 Romanian presidential elections took place on November 26th and December 10th .
Russia
- On March 26, the 2000 Russian presidential elections took place.
Switzerland
- On December 6th, the replacement election for the Federal Council seat of the resigned Adolf Ogi took place.
Slovenia
- The parliamentary elections in Slovenia 2000 took place on October 15th .

- The Spanish parliamentary elections in 2000 took place on March 12th .
