Wenceslaus of Thun and Hohenstein
Wenzeslaus Graf von Thun and Hohenstein (born August 13, 1629 in Tetschen , † January 6, 1673 in Passau ) was bishop of Passau from 1664 to 1673 and bishop of Gurk from 1665 to 1673 .
biography
Wenzel the son of Johann Sigismund Graf von Thun and his second wife Anna Margareta von Wolkenstein. He was the half-brother of the two Salzburg Prince Archbishops Guidobald and Johann Ernst Graf von Thun .
Wenzeslaus von Thun and Hohenstein was ordained priest in 1655.
During the city fire of 1662 Wenceslaus was from Thun Passauer provost and came - after the St. Stephan's Cathedral had been partially destroyed by the flames - this one, a modern to have built today's baroque cathedral. To do this, he brought the Italian master builder Carlo Lurago from Prague , who was commissioned to build a baroque cathedral with the help of the remains of the Gothic cathedral.
Just two years after the city fire, the only 35-year-old Wenceslas - who had been a canon in Salzburg and a capitular in Passau to date - was elected on March 27, 1664 as the successor to Karl Joseph of Austria and thus as the new prince-bishop . The episcopal ordination followed on April 20.
On August 10, 1665, he was also elected Bishop of Gurk.
He placed his reign as Passau prince-bishop entirely under the sign of rebuilding the cathedral and repairing the damage from the Thirty Years' War . In addition, a serious dispute sparked between him and the Passau Jesuits , which ultimately even led to the withdrawal of priestly training for the Jesuits.
Wenzeslaus von Thun was the first bishop to be buried in the newly built bishop's crypt under St. Stephen's Cathedral in Passau. His monument is to the left of the high altar.
