The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea [ ˈkɛnzɪŋtən ən ˈtʃɛlsi ] is a borough of London and forms the western edge of the city center. When the Greater London administrative region was founded in 1965, it emerged from the Metropolitan Borough of Kensington and the Metropolitan Borough of Chelsea in the former County of London . The addition "Royal Borough" (royal parish) was given because the borough of Kensington was once a royal private property.

There is a city partnership with Cannes in France .

Kensington and Chelsea is the most densely populated and one of the smallest administrative units in Great Britain . The population in 2008 was composed of 68.3% white, 10% Asian, 6.6% black and 15.1% other (as of 2011). Through the company Kensington and Chelsea TMO , the district is responsible for public housing , such as the one in Grenfell Tower , which burned down in June 2017.
