Wilhelm Ludwig Freiherr Schilling von Canstatt (born August 5, 1841 in Seehaus, Grand Duchy of Baden , † June 24, 1910 in Baden-Baden ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

Wilhelm was the eldest son of the Baden chamberlain and forester Wilhelm Schilling von Cannstatt (1802–1862) and his wife Lina, née Wilhelmi (1817–1882).

Military career

Schilling attended a private school and the Lyceum in Heidelberg as well as the high school in Mosbach . He was then a cadet in Karlsruhe and on April 25, 1859, was transferred to the 3rd Fusilier Battalion of the Baden Army as Portepeefähnrich. Two months later he was promoted to lieutenant and from March 1864 to October 1866 was a battalion adjutant and at the same time investigating officer of the 2nd battalion. During the war against Prussia in 1866 Schilling took part in the battles at Hundheim , Werbach and Gerchsheim as a first lieutenant and was awarded the Knight's Cross, 2nd class of the Order of the Zähringer Lion with Swords , for his behavior .

After the war he was briefly assigned to the military shooting school in Rastatt and from May 1868 served as an investigative officer in charge of the 1st battalion. During the mobilization on the occasion of the war against France , Schilling took over the 4th company, which he led at Wörth , Colmar , on the Ognon , at Dijon , Pasques , Autun , Châteauneuf and Villersexel as well as in front of Strasbourg and Belfort . He was awarded the Iron Cross II. Class and the Knight's Cross of the Military Karl Friedrich Order of Merit , and on February 15, 1871, he was promoted to captain to company commander.

After the peace agreement , Schilling was taken over in this capacity with the conclusion of the military convention on July 15, 1871 in the Association of the Prussian Army . On December 15, 1881, as a surplus major, he was transferred to the King Grenadier Regiment (2nd West Prussian) No. 7 in Liegnitz . This was followed from October 1884 to August 1888 as commander of the 2nd Battalion in the 2nd Posenen Infantry Regiment No. 19 in Jauer . He was then commissioned with the functions of the regular staff officer and on September 19, 1888, he was appointed lieutenant colonel to the regular staff officer. With the promotion to colonel on November 18, 1890, Schilling received his appointment as commander of the infantry regiment "von Lützow" (1st Rheinisches) No. 25 stationed in Rastatt . As a representative of the commander of the 21st Infantry Brigade , he was assigned to Breslau from May 23, 1894 , and on June 16, 1894, he was promoted to major general and commander of this large unit . From April 1, 1898 to January 8, 1900 he was Lieutenant General in command of the Grand Ducal Hessian (25th) Division in Darmstadt and in this position received the star for the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves. With the approval of his resignation request , Schilling was then put up for disposal with the award of the Crown Order, First Class, with the statutory pension . After his departure , Grand Duke Friedrich I honored him on January 21, 1901 with the Grand Cross of the Order of the Zähringer Lion.

Schilling married Luise Grimm on July 1, 1869 in Baden-Baden. The son Wilhelm (* 1870) emerged from the marriage.
