Willimantic was organized on February 22, 1881 as a Town under the name Howard . The name was changed to Willimantic in 1883 . Originally the area was called Township No. 8, Eighth Range North of Waldo Patent (T8 R8 NWP) and registered before 1860 as Plantation No. 8, Eighth Range organized for electoral purposes, then also elected as Howard Plantation in 1860 . The name Howard goes back to the early settler Abijah Howard from Vermont.
The name Willimantic is said to be derived from an Indian word which translates as "place of fast flowing waters" which would be appropriate. However, Willimantic was named after Willimantic , Connecticut . Willimantic, Connecticut was home to the Jillson Brothers cotton mill, which bought land in Howard, Greeley Falls. The Willimantic Linen Company built a factory for wooden spools in Willimantic in 1880, which contributed to population growth. After the factory closed in 1903, many families moved to Milo to find work. The buildings were bought by William Earley, who built a hotel and purchased additional land for a holiday camp. This was sold in 1965 and renamed "Two Falls Camp".
