geography

location

The Winterstein-Taunuskamm lies in the Taunus Nature Park between Ober-Mörlen in the north-northeast, Bad Nauheim in the northeast, Friedberg and Ockstadt in the east-northeast, Ober- and Nieder-Rosbach in the east, Köppern in the southeast, Friedrichsdorf and Bad Homburg vor der Höhe in the south, the Saalburg castle in the southwest, Wehrheim and Pfaffenwiesbach in the west and Friedrichsthal and Langenhain-Ziegenberg in the northwest.

Natural allocation

The ridge forms the subunit Winterstein- Taunus ridge (301.4) in the natural spatial main unit group Taunus (No. 30) and in the main unit Hoher Taunus (301 ). In the same main unit, the subunits Johannisberg- Taunus or Nauheimer Taunussporn (301.5) border in the northeast and Feldberg-Taunuskamm (301.3) in the southwest.

The landscape falls to the southeast into the subunit Homburger Vortaunus (300.3), which belongs to the main unit Vortaunus (300) , to the west it leads into the Usinger Basin (302.5) and to the northwest into the Münster-Maibach threshold (302.4), two subunits the main unit of the Eastern Hintertaunus (302).

To the east the landscape falls into the Friedberger Wetterau (234.30), which belongs to the subunit Southern Wetterau (234.3) , and to the north it falls into the Mörlener Bay (234.21), which belongs to the subunit of the Northwest Wetterau (234.2 ), two natural areas of the Rhine-Main- The main unit of Wetterau (234) is located in the lowlands (23 ).

mountains

The mountains and elevations of the Winterstein-Taunus ridge include - sorted by height in meters (m) above sea level (MSL; unless otherwise specified according to):

Flowing waters

The rivers include the Wiesbach , Holzbach and Seebach, three tributaries of the Usa , which flows around the natural area to the north , the Straßbach , a tributary of the east running Wetter, and the Rosbach and Erlenbach, two tributaries of the southeast flowing Nidda .

Infrastructure

In Roman times, the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes ran parallel to the Winterstein- Taunus ridge ( RLK routes 3 and 4, Hochtaunus and Osttaunus routes). Larger fort complexes are the Saalburg fort with a museum located on the south-western edge and the well-preserved Kapersburg fort in the middle part . The striking places and sights of the Winterstein-Taunuskamm also include a 105.35 m high telecommunications tower on the Steinkopf and the 17.65 m high observation tower Wintersteinturm on its foothills.

The federal motorway 5 with the junctions Ober-Mörlen and Friedberg runs east past the natural area and through its northeastern part . The latter meets the federal road 455 between Ober- and Nieder-Rosbach and Köppern , which continues beyond the autobahn as state road  3057 in the direction of Köppern. The B 456 leads from Bad Homburg past the Saalburg and Wehrheim to Usingen roughly along the south-western border of the natural area . The European long-distance hiking trail E3 , which crosses the Limes, runs through the southern part of the natural area and past the Steinkopf to the west .
