Wolf Heinrich Friedrich Karl Graf von Baudissin (born January 30, 1789 in Copenhagen , Denmark , † April 4, 1878 in Dresden ) was a German diplomat , writer and translator .

He came from the noble family Baudissin . His parents were Count Carl Ludwig von Baudissin (* August 21, 1756 - March 1, 1814) and his wife, Countess Sophie Luise Charlotte von Dernath (* August 29, 1764; † August 9, 1828). His brother Otto Friedrich Magnus (1792-1865) became a Danish officer.

Life

After studying law and administrative sciences in Kiel , Göttingen and Heidelberg , Baudissin worked as legation secretary in the Danish civil service and stayed in Stockholm from 1810 to 1814 with his uncle Magnus von Dernath , in Vienna and in Paris . In the summer of 1813 he was imprisoned at Friedrichsort Fortress for six months because of his German sentiments . From 1823 to 1854 he was the owner of Gut Sophienhof near Preetz . He made trips to Italy, France and Greece and from 1827 onwards mostly stayed in Dresden. Here he worked with August Wilhelm Schlegel and Ludwig Tieck . Together with Tieck's daughter Dorothea Tieck , he played a major role in the Shakespeare translations that were created under Ludwig Tie's direction. Baudissin, who spoke eight languages, also translated works by Molière , Carlo Goldoni and Carlo Gozzi, among others .

His first wife was Friederike Juliane von Baudissin (born January 9, 1784, † March 15, 1836), the daughter of the diplomat Heinrich Friedrich von Baudissin . From 1840, Baudissin was married to the writer Sophie Kaskel , who came from a Jewish banking family, and owned a summer house in Wachwitz (today at Steinberg 3) in addition to his Dresden city apartment . His nephew was Wolf Wilhelm Friedrich Graf von Baudissin .
