10th international professional competition in Duisburg 1961, entrance to the Rheinstahl company for the steel processing professions competitions

WorldSkills is a benchmarking non- academic professions for participants up to 23 years of age. Up until the early 1990s, the event was called the German International Professional Competition . Unofficially, the names professional Olympics or professional world championships are also common. It is organized by the WorldSkills International organization based in Amsterdam.

history

This performance comparison has been held since 1950, with it always being held in Madrid until 1957 , then only in Europe until 1969 and only after that, starting with Tokyo, worldwide.

Immediately after the Second World War, the focus was on the idea of international understanding . Today the idea of power transfer is predominant. For international comparison there are nationwide preliminary decisions as to which participants will be sent to the competitions. These are organized by the respective national associations.

The event took place annually until 1971 and has only taken place every two years in odd years since then. It all began in 1950. Francesco Albert Vidal was commissioned to organize a competition for Spain and Portugal. Until 1957 the event took place in Madrid . Young people from Germany, Great Britain, France, Morocco and Switzerland initially traveled unannounced and at their own expense to participate. In 1958 the event took place for the first time outside of Spain in Brussels . In 1970 there was the first non-European event in Tokyo .

Today 82 countries or regions are members. There are competitions in over 50 professions with around 1600 participants; people up to 22 years of age are eligible to participate.

In even years, a European championship has been taking place with EuroSkills since 2008, hosted by WorldSkills Europe, also based in Amsterdam, with 30 European national member associations. There are competitions in around 45 professions with around 600 participants. Eligible are people up to 25 years of age. Here too, the delegation is carried out by the national associations on the basis of national championships.

Disciplines

World championships are currently being held in 52 disciplines - these are also continuously updated due to changes in the training profiles. Not all state associations take part in all disciplines. Germany, for example, participates in 40 disciplines. The medal table shows that Switzerland in particular has always achieved very good placements from the German-speaking countries and was the best European country up to 2001.
