Xàtiva ( Valencian , [ ˈʃativa ]; Spanish Játiva [ ˈxatiβa ]) is a medium- sized town in the province of Valencia in Spain . The city has 29,231 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) and is one of the culturally and historically most important cities in the region. Xàtiva is also the district capital of the La Costera region .

history

Xàtiva was once founded by the Iberians . After the Romans and Moors , Jaime I of Aragon conquered the city in 1244 and created an important archive there. The city experienced its heyday until the beginning of the 18th century. Xàtiva is famous because the Moors produced the first paper on European soil here around 1150 .

Since the city had sided with the Habsburgs in the War of the Spanish Succession , it was sacked in 1707 after a month-long siege. Women and children died by fire in the town church. That is why today the residents are called Xàtivas socarrats ("burned out"). The rest of the population was resettled in the Mancha . Xàtiva lost by the Bourbons the previous privileges, even the name of the city was named in honor of the king Felipe V in Nueva Colonia de San Felipe changed. It was not until 1811 that the old name could be restored by the Parliament of Cadiz . The painting of Philip V hangs upside down in protest in the city museum of Xàtiva to this day.
