Xagħra [ ˈʃɐːrɐ ] (or: Ix-Xagħra ) is a village in the northwestern part of the island of Gozo in the Republic of Malta . Xagħra is the second largest village on the island after Nadur and has 4129 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018).
history
This was probably the first part of Gozo to be settled, as megalithic remains can be found here , such as the temples of Ġgantija , which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site , the stone circle of Xagħra , the temple of Santa Verna and the North Cave and Għar ta 'Għejżu with finds from the Ġgantija phase of temple culture.
In the village is the restored Ta'-Kola windmill , which was built in 1725 on behalf of the then Grand Master of the Order of St. John Antonio Manoel de Vilhena and which now houses a mill museum. The dripstone caves Xerri’s Grotto and Ninu's Cave , which can be visited, were discovered beneath private houses in the village .
Parish
The village church Basilica of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary ( English Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary ), known locally as il-Bambina , which is located in the center, was founded in 1967 by Pope Paul VI. raised to the basilica .
