History and sights

Zell am Moos, church and inn

The place or the Church of the Assumption of Mary is mentioned for the first time in 1107 as a Latin cella , probably an economic cell of the Benedictine monastery Mondsee . The connection to Mondseeland still exists today. The Marian patronage has also been documented since 1336. Today's church building, which is essentially Gothic, also dates from this period. The former monastery tavern also still exists today as Wirt z'Zell .

In the middle of the 17th century a locally important Marian pilgrimage developed, which is why the church was partially rebuilt in 1672. In 1706, however, the Mondseer Hilfbergkirche was consecrated to Maria Hilf by a patron saint of Ulrich, with the result that the pilgrimage shifted there. The church received its current appearance in the late baroque (18th century), in the course of the Hosephine reforms the place became the parish seat in 1778, and then the Mondsee monastery was abolished in 1791.

Today Zell am Moos is a place of summer tourism and a seaside resort. Compared to other Salzkammergut locations, it has retained its village character and active village life.
