===The future=== |
|||
The Snaefell Steam Packet Company intend to leave Heysham and switch their RO-PAX operations to Twelve Quays at Birkenhead. It is planned for the new Snaefell to operate this route, whilst the Manxman will provide extra one-a-day services from Heysham. The fastcraft Princess Cliona will become the mainstay on the Douglas-Liverpool route whilst the Tynwald will manage the Irish routes, whilst the SuperSeaCat Two will operate excursional routes, with the SeaCat vessels operating for Welden Marine elsewhere. |

His wealth is estimated at over £660 million, which includes self-made and inherited money. |

===History=== |
===History=== |
||
Welden was born to Alan Lightoller and Barbara Welden in January 1976 at Noble's Hospital as the third of four children. He was born 8 weeks premature and at the time was given a few days to live, however he made a full recovery and was released from hospital four months later in May 1976 after having gained sufficient strength to not need round-the-clock care. |
|||
Welden was born to Alan Lightoller and Barbara Welden in 1976 as the third of four children. Welden attended Murray's Road School from 1981 to 1987, then Ballakermeen High School from 1987 to 1993. He obtained 12 GCSEs and 3 AS Levels in Maths, Physics and Computing. Welden went on to Marine School in 1993 and qualified as an officer in 1996, being posted with the then Lightoller Steam Packet Company aboard the SeaCat Lightoller as a helmsman. It was aboard the SeaCat Lightoller that he met actress Meghan Murdoch, with whom he had one son, Paul, before the couple parted in 1998 after two years together. In 1998, Welden had a daughter, Cliona, with Adelaide Collins before they split up. |
|||
Welden attended Murray's Road Primary School from the age of 5 in 1981, but he was suspended from the school due to numerous outbursts of bad behaviour. He was instead sent to the Illiam Dhone School in Castletown on the Isle of Man, which he attended from 1982–1994, where he was reported to have achieved up to 10 GCSEs and 3 A-levels. He met actress Meghan Murdoch the same year, before attending Marine School in Fleetwood, gaining his officer tickets in 18 months instead of the usual two years. He was posted to the Lightoller Steam Packet Company in August 1995 aged 19. |

|||

|||
Welden was then offered a promotion, but only if he moved aboard the RMS Snaefell 3, which was and still is operating from Southampton. He was promoted to Lieutenant and Third Officer of the 118,000 tonne liner which was operating across the Atlantic Ocean twice a month. Welden was promoted again to Lieutenant Commander and First Officer of the Snaefell 3, and then in 2000 offered a position as Chief Officer back for the Lightoller Steam Packet Company on the Mannin Viking RO-RO car ferry. It was Welden's last tour as an officer before in 2005 achieving his first command, which was the HSC SeaCat Torres (now SeaCat Welden). Welden was then given his first ocean liner command, with Lightoller Sea Containers' prized asset, the Snaefell 3, commanding a 4-month World Cruise, which was said by Welden to be "The most successful cruise I have served on". Welden remained in command of the Snaefell 3 until 2007 where he was recalled to Irish Sea duties, commanding the RO-PAX ferry Manxman. It was during a time that he was in command of the vessel that his father Alan died of a heart attack aged 67. This gave him sole control of his father's businesses, including the Welden Tower which was to be the Company's new HQ under construction in Douglas. |
|||
|
|||
It was then unknown at that time he was dating an employee of the Lightoller Steam Packet Company, the Polish Ilze Dabrowska. Welden decided to embark on rebranding the Company, with a Manx theme around the Company rather than the "SeaCat" theme his father had applied when the majority of the fleet operated on the Irish Sea were fastcraft. Welden also at that time took the opportunity to rebrand the Company's name, with the name Snaefell Steam Packet Company being reapplied before the arrival of a £70 million fast conventional ferry named Snaefell, which Welden secured the construction of in November 2007. Now, Welden is at the rank of Vice Admiral and continues to be in charge of all of Welden Marine's operations. In 2009, he will become the sole owner and manager with the retirements of the chairman of the Snaefell Steam Packet Company and the rebranded Welden Line. |
|||
Welden's first assignment was aboard the sideloading vessel MS Snaefell of 1976 as the chief helmsman. It was during this time that Welden said he felt "youthful and daring". It was a matter of five years until Welden got his first command in 2000, coinicidentally, the Snaefell. During this period, Welden rotated between the "classic" vessels, the Snaefell and the RO-RO vessel Viking. Welden was a popular master during his second tenure as master of the Snaefell, taking passengers on "FunBoat" excursions to various ports around the Irish Sea, which he was in charge of right up until the vessel's sale in 2007, which coincided with the death of his father. Welden became CEO of the Lightoller Steam Packet Company, and went back to the drawing board, with the entire company becoming rebranded with the classic livery and traditional vessel names. It appears recently that Welden has removed himself from the PR (Public Relations) exercise of his company as his blog has not been updated since July 26 2008. |
|||
===Welden Marine=== |
|||
Welden started the Welden Marine company in 2007 aged 31 as the company to supercede Lightoller Sea Containers as the spearhead company of his entire operations, which has so far proven to be a stronger hand in business than it's predecessor. It's related businesses are as follows: |
|||
* Snaefell Steam Packet Company, which offers ferry services to and from the Isle of Man at various destinations around the Irish Sea currently operating with a fleet of three vessels. |
|||
* Welden Line, which offers cruises across the Atlantic Ocean twice a month with the Snaefell 3 ocean liner. |
|||
* Welden Raceway, which is a non-profitable stockcar racing company using the Nivison Stadium. |
|||
Welden received a CBE for his services to transport from HM Queen Elizabeth II in 2008. |
|||
===Personal Life=== |
===Personal Life=== |

Welden is engaged to actress Meghan Murdoch. They have three children, child actress Cliona Tallulah Welden (born July 28 1995), Paul William Welden (born January 22 1997) and Emily Madeleine Welden (born August 2 1998). It is rumoured that the couple are expecting a fourth child in 2009. |
|||
* Welden is the father to one son, Paul William and one daughter, Cliona Evanna Tallulah. He and his fiancée are expecting twins in October 2008. |
|||
* Welden is engaged to Ilze Dąbrowska and they got married on July 25 2008. |
|||
Welden is the current listed legal owner of the Isle of Man fastcraft Tynwald, according to an interview that he gave to the Manx Independent in April 2008. Welden is an avid supporter of Liverpool F.C.. Welden also enjoys attending stock car racing at the Nivison Stadium, which he recently purchased from government and started the company Welden Raceway in support of the venture. |
|||
* Welden is a big fan of Liverpool F.C. |
|||
===Relationship with the Press and Public=== |
|||
Welden has been known to give frequent interviews in Manx columnist Tony Ronan's article in the Manx Independent and occasionally in the other Manx newspapers. He has been known to give generally well-answered and structured interviews, however a comment during one interview gave Welden unwanted attention and for six months publicly refused to contact the press. After an apology was printed, Welden resumed an article alongside Ronan. |
|||
Since 2007, Welden provided a blog on the Snaefell Steam Packet Company website allowing the public and customers to contact him with their opinions of the Company, however it has been suggested by numerous sources Welden is now unwilling to use the blog and will continue his PR exercises via another source. |

Welden Manor is an 18th-century manor house on the Isle of Man, currently owned and resided in by James Welden CBE. It is currently the largest manor that is still resided in today, and despite it being a place of interest in the National Manx Heritage listings, it is not open for public viewing for "personal reasons" cited by James Welden. |
|||
===History=== |
|||
The manor was constructed in 1780 by Lord Welden, who was at the time, the richest shipping operator in the world, boasting a fleet of large paddlesteamers and clipper ships, however he was close to retirement at the age of 60 and chose to build a new pad to base his operations from, this being Welden Manor. Welden himself designed the manor and oversaw it's construction, taking just over 2 years. Since construction, the manor has seen various extensions, with it now suggestively two times as big as it was at completion. James Welden has implied that another wing is planned for the manor in the next few years. |
|||
===Design=== |
|||
Welden Manor currently consists of 5 wings, all of which have been added from around 1830 to 1975, all of which have been constructed by private contractors. There is a large circular driveway infront of the house around a large fountain. Currently, the house boasts around 25 acres of surrounding land, some of which has been privately leased. |

Snaefell Down
Snaefell Down is a new disaster film planned to revolve around the sinking of the RO-RO ferry Snaefell, with filming currently underway.
215 Years
215 Years is a docu-drama based on Welden Marine coming up to it's 215th Anniversary, however things have changed for the worse and the Company is in a rapid state of decline and is close to bankruptcy. James Welden is still in charge of the Company, however he is suffering from severe depression. The film was praised for the portrayal of the characters and the storyline, however also criticsed for apparently being very "morbid". It picked up "Manx Film of the Year" none the less. It also caused problems in the Welden family, however these were quickly resolved.
Characters
The Weldens
- James Welden: Welden has been the Chairman of the Company since late 2008, and has recently began to suffer from depression. Welden was widowed when his wife Ilze died in 2011. He blames himself for the apparent loss of the Company. Already heading for an early grave at 47, Welden breaks down about ⅔ of the way through the film, leaving Paul in charge. Played by himself
- Paul Welden: Paul was the Company's financial advisor, which left him the task to break the news to his father the Company was a matter of a few days or weeks from disaster. When is father dies, he takes charge and saves the Company by selling it to the Manx Government. Paul continues in charge of the Company and plans to rebuild the fleet. Played by John Derbyshire (adult) and himself (child)
- Cliona Welden-Collins: Cliona left school and joined the Company at a young age to care for her father. In 2011, Welden's wife Ilze had died, leaving Welden devastated. Shortly after, Cliona married, to Welden's disgust. She cared for him until he committed suicide, and was appointed CEO shortly after the last-ditch revival of the Company. - Raymond Murdoch: Murdoch plays one of Welden's most trusted advisors, however in 2015, Murdoch loses confidence and strength due to Parkinson's disease, leaving Welden devastated even further. It is not known what happens to him, however it is assumed he also died. Played by himself.
- Other unnamed advisors are seen in short scenes.
Plot
Act 1: 2011 Welden and his family attend the funeral of his wife, Ilze. This has left the family in a large state of disrepair and has made Welden suffer from a breakdown. Despite advances from an ex girlfriend, Welden vows that he will never marry or have a relationship again. At the funeral are friends and family, and Ilze's family. They blame Welden for her death, and Welden has to be restrained by Alan Albiston and his son Paul to prevent him throwing a chair across the room in his anger and frustation. He goes back to work and orders that a new board photo is taken to replace the one with his widow on. Shortly after this scene, Welden takes his family out for a drive, however he runs out of fuel in a remote part of the Island, leaving them stuck in the middle of nowhere. After a short scene with the family being driven back home on a low-loader, it switches to 2023.
Act 2: 2023 The Snaefell Steam Packet Company is beginning to fail, and with Welden now severely depressed, with the deaths of Paul Herbert and the illness of Raymond Murdoch getting to him, as well as his daughter's marriage to a man Welden does not like and doesn't think is for her. None the less, he attempts to get on with him, but fails and ends up injuring Cliona's husband. In a rage, Welden destroyed the boardroom in the Welden Buildings and vanished for a days on end, much to the worry of his family. When he does return, Paul announces that the Company has a matter of a few days to a few weeks to run before bankruptcy. Upon hearing this, Welden dismisses all staff except for Paul, Cliona, Alan Albiston and Raymond Murdoch. He says that he is prepared to close the Company in a bid to ensure that it was independent for the time it existed, however this causes revolt against the Company. In his deluded state, Welden announces his vessels will stand down from service, with riots breaking out outside the office. This forces Welden into restoring a schedule, however a riot soon breaks out aboard the ferry Snaefell, causing the inside vessel to become badly damaged, further money issues being placed upon the Company.
The resulting chaos causes Welden to suffer from a panic attack. Cliona rushes into his office to see Welden destroying his office. After he is restrained, he is taken into hospital, with Paul taking charge of the Company, which is still failing. After officially releasing the Company's state to the public and Government, anger turns into fear that the vessels will not be able to run once there is no money left to do so. Paul Welden is contacted privately by the Manx Government to discuss the sale of the Company to them. When Paul brings this proposal to the board, they all vehemently disagree, however in a secret meeting away from the board, Alan Albiston, Cliona and Paul consider this proposal, however the Company would lose all independence and become property of the Isle of Man. After seeing that the Company will be bankrupt in 24 hours, and still resisting money for the Princess Cliona and Snaefell, Welden sells the Company to the Manx Government.
Act 3: 2024 The Manx Government has made the Company thrive, and now under the management of Paul and Cliona (who has since divorced her husband), they have begun rebuilding the fleet and are beginning to make the Company thrive. The last two scenes show Paul, Cliona and Alan at James Welden's grave, which is near the sea, and then they look out to see the Snaefell cross the sea.
Welden Marine Fleet
The Company's fleet has been rapidly depleted due to loss of money, and only two ferries remain in service to the Isle of Man, these being below: NB - These vessels are currently preparing to enter service, hence their probable selection. Due to this, both vessels were remote control models.
- MS Snaefell (8) - The Snaefell is the last conventional ferry of her type in the world at the time, and has become somewhat an interest of many companies, with the Company refusing to sell the vessel for any cost. According to Paul, the Snaefell has not been refitted/overhauled since her 2011 refit.
- HSC Princess Cliona (7) - The Princess Cliona is the last fastcraft in operation on the Irish Sea, with all operators disposing of their own. The craft has become the Company's prized asset after many years in operation and has according to Paul, not been refitted/overhauled since 2010.

Vice Admiral James Paul Mark Welden MHK CBE (born January 2 1976 in Douglas, Isle of Man) is a Manx-born businessman and qualified marine officer. His wealth is estimated at over £660 million, which includes self-made and inherited money.
History
Welden was born to Alan Lightoller and Barbara Welden in January 1976 at Noble's Hospital as the third of four children. He was born 8 weeks premature and at the time was given a few days to live, however he made a full recovery and was released from hospital four months later in May 1976 after having gained sufficient strength to not need round-the-clock care.
Welden Marine
Welden started the Welden Marine company in 2007 aged 31 as the company to supercede Lightoller Sea Containers as the spearhead company of his entire operations, which has so far proven to be a stronger hand in business than it's predecessor. It's related businesses are as follows:
- Snaefell Steam Packet Company, which offers ferry services to and from the Isle of Man at various destinations around the Irish Sea currently operating with a fleet of three vessels.
- Welden Line, which offers cruises across the Atlantic Ocean twice a month with the Snaefell 3 ocean liner.
- Welden Raceway, which is a non-profitable stockcar racing company using the Nivison Stadium.
Welden received a CBE for his services to transport from HM Queen Elizabeth II in 2008.
Personal Life
Welden is engaged to actress Meghan Murdoch. They have three children, child actress Cliona Tallulah Welden (born July 28 1995), Paul William Welden (born January 22 1997) and Emily Madeleine Welden (born August 2 1998). It is rumoured that the couple are expecting a fourth child in 2009.
Welden is the current listed legal owner of the Isle of Man fastcraft HSC Tynwald, according to an interview that he gave to the Manx Independent in April 2008. Welden is an avid supporter of Liverpool F.C.. Welden also enjoys attending stock car racing at the Nivison Stadium, which he recently purchased from government and started the company Welden Raceway in support of the venture.
Relationship with the Press and Public
Welden has been known to give frequent interviews in Manx columnist Tony Ronan's article in the Manx Independent and occasionally in the other Manx newspapers. He has been known to give generally well-answered and structured interviews, however a comment during one interview gave Welden unwanted attention and for six months publicly refused to contact the press. After an apology was printed, Welden resumed an article alongside Ronan.

History
The manor was constructed in 1780 by Lord Welden, who was at the time, the richest shipping operator in the world, boasting a fleet of large paddlesteamers and clipper ships, however he was close to retirement at the age of 60 and chose to build a new pad to base his operations from, this being Welden Manor. Welden himself designed the manor and oversaw it's construction, taking just over 2 years. Since construction, the manor has seen various extensions, with it now suggestively two times as big as it was at completion. James Welden has implied that another wing is planned for the manor in the next few years.
Design
Welden Manor currently consists of 5 wings, all of which have been added from around 1830 to 1975, all of which have been constructed by private contractors. There is a large circular driveway infront of the house around a large fountain. Currently, the house boasts around 25 acres of surrounding land, some of which has been privately leased.

The HSC Princess Cliona (7) is a high speed catamaran car ferry owned and operated by the Snaefell Steam Packet Company, currently being refitted in Southampton. The Princess Cliona was named for Cliodhna and in context to CEO James Welden's daughter Cliona. The craft is currently the fastest vessel of her type in operation in the world. The craft was originally built by Oberlander AG for Mueller Line, before being sold on to Mexican firm Express Ferries.
Concept and Construction
The Express was ordered as the Mueller Express as already mentioned for Mueller Line, who planned to operate the vessel on their Rostock/Kiel to Copenhagen fastcraft services. Orignally designed with a top speed of 43 knots ([convert: unit mismatch]) using BMW P4 engines, however it was decided to upgrade to the more powerful BMW P6 engine. The Mueller Express achieved a record-breaking 49 knots (56 mph) on her trials on the Baltic Sea in 2002. The craft was then fitted with a mezzanine car deck to allow higher vehicle loads to be carried without the need for refit. The Mueller Express is built from aluminium.
The Princess Cliona is fitted with four stabilisers, with two forward and two aft. To propel the craft, four KaMeWa water jets were fitted in a resiliently mounted position, which was found to improve the craft's overall power. After the fitting out of the craft, she ran three speed trials, one in the Baltic Sea and two in calm and moderate conditions in the North Sea just north of Denmark. The craft was signed over to Mueller Line in May 2002.
History
When the vessel entered service, she was awarded with the "Fastcraft of the Year" award after completing just 10 return sailings. It was in 2005 it was first rumoured Mueller Line were looking to sell the craft due to the high amounts of fuel it uses, however it was found the vessel consumed 15% less than a Mark II Fincantieri MDV-1800-class fastcraft. However, in 2006 the Mueller Express was laid up in Rostock and put up for sale for undisclosed reasons. To make the name available for a newer vessel, the Mueller Express became simply the Express.
It was rumoured that Lightoller Sea Containers were interested in acquiring the Express for use by it's Lightoller Steam Packet Company on the Irish Sea, however the company quickly denied these rumours. Two days later, the vessel was purchased by Mexican firm Express Ferries, who operated fastcraft from Cancún in Mexico to Carribean Islands. The large craft was acquired for €27.5 million and then left Germany in Express Ferries livery headed for Mexico. The craft retained it's flag, which was (and still is) in the Bahamas and commenced operations for Express Ferries in 2006. The Express was proving a very successful operation on the Cancún-Kingston route, and quickly became popular with the travellers using the route, however at the end of 2007, it was announced that the craft would be sent for lay-up in Barbados and be put up for sale due to high operation costs. The Express completed it's final sailing in September 2007, was destored and then sailed light to Bridgetown. The Express has been laid up in Bridgetown ever since, with numerous operators reportedly looking at the craft.
In July 2008, it was announced by Welden Marine that they were planning to take a team out to inspect the craft for a possible purchase for Irish Sea service. On July 22, 2007, the Snaefell Steam Packet Company announced that they had purchased the Express for £27 million, and is set to enter service in 2009 after an extensive refit in Southampton.[1] In August 2008, the craft was renamed to become the seventh Princess Cliona.
