For the first time, the first Croatian league was divided into two seasons A and B, although these were not equal because the 12 best-placed clubs from the previous season competed in season A and the rest in season B.
The first five teams from season A and the first from season B then played the champions. The remaining seven teams from season A and the second of season B played four more start authorizations for season A of the following season.
