ABU Song Festivals
The ABU Song Festivals are annual music festivals based on the concept of the Eurovision Song Contest . The format includes two events, a radio and a TV song festival, which are organized by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) .
Every country that is a full member of the ABU is invited to take part in the events. The radio festival is a competition with a jury who selects a top 5 winners and is broadcast live . The television festival is not a competition, but a musical gala that is recorded live . Each participating country can then broadcast the event in the national language, along with comments and information about the festival.
history
The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) already organized an ESC-inspired competition for its members between 1985 and 1987, which was called the ABU Popular Song Contest and in which 14 countries from the Asian Pacific region took part. The winner was chosen by a jury. South Korea , New Zealand and Australia achieved victories in this competition. From 1989 to 1991 the ABU produced the ABU Golden Kite World Song Festival in Malaysia with the participation of countries from the Asian Pacific, but also Yugoslavia and Finland .
In 2008 the EBU proposed a partnership with the ABU for the realization of an Asiavision Song Contest , but these plans never came to fruition . In September 2008 it was finally announced that the Asian Eurovision Song Contest format would be given to the private company Asiavision Pte. Ltd. was sold in Singapore . The name that was originally intended for the contest was Asiavision Song Contest , but later this was changed to Our Sound - The Asia-Pacific Song Contest , due to a request from the ABU, which use the term " Asiavision " for their news service. Initially it was planned that the contest (as a live broadcast television event with televoting) would debut in 2009, but this was later postponed to March 2010 and to Macau , then again to November 2010 to Mumbai in India , finally it was then completely canceled. The reason given was the "persistent problems between the organizers and the EBU".
Shortly before the start of the ABU Song Festival, the ABU considered the possibility of holding the ABU ASEAN TV Song Festival in Thailand. The ASEAN music competitions were occasionally held between 1981 and 1997, but Bintang Radio ASEAN has been hosted by local radio stations since 2011 .
In November 2011, the ABU announced that they would host their own TV and radio festivals, which should take place in Seoul , the South Korean capital, for the 49th General Assembly in October 2012. The name Asiavision Song Contest was initially considered as a name for these festivals, but later they were officially called the ABU TV Song Festival and ABU Radio Song Festival . According to ABU, the registration deadline for participants in the first edition of the ABU TV Song Festival was May 18, 2012.
format
In contrast to the format of the Eurovision Song Contest, there are two versions of the ABU Song Festival, namely the ABU Radio Song Festival and the ABU TV Song Festival.
ABU Radio Song Festival
The ABU Radio Song Festival is a competition for musicians who are not under contract with any recording company . The ABU recommends that its members present the participating musicians and their songs on the radio. Each participant is selected by a broadcaster. A jury made up of representatives from ABU members selects 15 finalists from 26 entries. The finalists appear at the general assembly of the ABU. There, in turn, a jury will honor the best performers. The festival lasted two hours.

The festival was recorded and will first be broadcast by the participating ABU members. ABU members who do not participate and broadcasters who are not members of the ABU should be allowed to broadcast the festival later for a fee. Each musician is selected by a broadcaster who is a member of the ABU. The musicians appear at the general assembly of the ABU.
