The ABU Radio Song Festival 2012 was the first edition of the annual ABU Radio Song Festival . The competition took place on October 11th at KBS Hall in South Korea's capital Seoul. Of the 26 songs submitted by 18 TV stations in 15 different countries, 13 reached the final on October 11th by a jury preselection. Originally, two further entries had qualified for the final, but Fiji and Sri Lanka withdrew their final entries for unknown reasons, with Fiji being represented with another entry which did not survive the jury preselection.
South Korea won the Grand Prix Award and with it the festival, the only one of all ABU Song Festivals so far conceived as a competition and not as a gala , with the boy band Bily Acoustie and their song For A Rest .
prehistory
The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) had already organized a Eurovision Song Contest- inspired competition for its members from 1985 to 1987 , the ABU Popular Song Contest , in which 14 countries participated. The concept of the show was similar to that of the Radio Song Festival with a jury that could determine the winner. The winners were South Korea, New Zealand and Australia. From 1989 to 1991 there was a co-production by the ABU members and Yugoslavia and Finland, which took place in Malaysia under the name ABU Golden Kite World Song Festival .
In 2008 the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) offered the ABU a partnership to set up an Asiavision Song Contest , but nothing came of it, and in September 2008 it was announced that the EBU had sold the concept for an Asian variant to a private company called Asiavision Pte. Ltd. had sold in Singapore. The original name was Asiavision Song Contest , but later, at the request of the ABU, it became Our Sound - The Asia-Pacific Song Contest , as Asiavision is a name for the ABU's message exchange system. The competition was originally intended to be held as a live show with televoting for the first time in 2009, but was then postponed to March 2010 (in Macau ) and then to November 2010 (in Mumbai ) on the grounds that there were "unresolved issues between the organizers and the EBU" .
Shortly before the initial organization of the ABU Song Festival, the ABU dealt with the possible hosting of an ABU ASEAN TV Song Festival in Thailand . The first ASEAN Song Contests were held between 1981 and 1997, but since 2011 the competitions have been held exclusively in cooperation with ASEAN radio stations such as Bintang Radio ASEAN .
In November 2011, the ABU announced that it would in future hold its own TV and radio song festivals in Seoul, the South Korean capital, coinciding with the 49th General Assembly in October 2012. The name Asiavision Song Contest was traded as a possibility, but in the end the names ABU Radio Song Festival and ABU TV Song Festival were chosen.

As a member of ABU, Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) hosted the 1st ABU Radio Song Festival. In contrast to the Eurovision Song Contest , the Asian version takes the form of a TV and radio festival. The 1st ABU Radio Song Festival coincided with the 49th General Assembly of ABU , which was also held in Seoul.
