Coordinates: 57 ° 56 '  N , 12 ° 32'  O Alingsås is a municipality ( Swedish commun ) in the Swedish province of Västra Götalands län and the historic province of Västergötland . The main town of the municipality is Alingsås .

history

The municipality was formed in 1974 by merging the municipalities of Alingsås and Hemsjö and larger parts of Bjärke.

Before the amalgamation of Älvsborgs län , Skaraborgs län and Göteborgs och Bohus län to Västra Götalands län , Alingsås belonged to the province of Älvsborg.
