Alles in Butter (Original title: Butter ) is an American comedy film directed by Jim Field Smith with Yara Shahidi and Jennifer Garner in the leading roles.

action

10-year-old Destiny is a foster child in Des Moines , Iowa who eventually joins Ethan and Jill Emmet after living with different families. When she visits an exhibition on the occasion of a folk festival, she sees a work of art made of butter that depicts Christ's “Last Supper” . She skillfully completes the Holy Grail in the sculpture and thus impresses the creator of the work of art, Bob Pickler.

Bob has won the Johnston County Butter Carving Championship for the past 15 years. After all, he is asked not to take part in the next competition in order to give other talents a chance. Bob's ambitious wife Laura confronts him and humiliates him in front of her stepdaughter Kaitlin. Then she drives to a member of the organizing committee and wants to protest against the decision. Meanwhile, Bob drives to a strip club in a rage. There the stripper Brooke turns him on and shortly afterwards they disappear into his car. After the two are surprised by Bob's wife, Laura destroys his car with her SUV . At dinner Laura informs her family that she will take part in the butter competition herself because of the prestige that the winner will gain. Destiny also wants to participate, as does Brooke, who wants revenge on the Picklers because Bob still owes her $ 600. Destiny presents a black slave as a sculpture, who travels on a train to symbolize the Underground Railroad , while Laura creates the scene of a praying family. Although Laura has little experience, she comes in second behind Destiny, who wins the hearts of the judges with a heartfelt speech.

When Brooke goes to the Picklers to collect their money, she meets Bob's daughter Kaitlin. She lets in and goes to her room with her. They start playing "Truth or Dare" which ends with the two of them ending up in bed. Kaitlin is drawn to Brooke's unconventional lifestyle and demeanor, while Brooke only thinks about how to collect the debt, which she has now doubled to $ 1,200. Kaitlin assures her that she will get the money. At the same time, Laura seduces used car salesman Boyd Bolton, an old friend from high school days. Boyd then falsely claims that Ethan bribed him to help Destiny with the butter sculpture. Laura suggests that the competition be canceled. The Emmets are upset and although Ethan denies everything and the circumstances speak for them, Destiny agrees.

Brooke receives her money from Kaitlin, who now has a crush on her. Then Brooke meets Destiny after school and buys her a professional kitchen knife for $ 1,200 to help her win. When Destiny gets home, a social worker informs her that her biological mother has passed away.

As a competition sculpture, Laura recreates the complete assassination attempt on John F. Kennedy , including the head injury of the President, Jackie Kennedy and the security guard rushing to help. Destiny, on the other hand, creates a sculpture of her biological mother, who is sitting on a rocking chair with a baby in her arms. The night before the award ceremony, Boyd breaks into the exhibition hall and defaces Destiny's sculpture with a hand-held gas burner . Destiny, devastated, meets Laura in the toilet shortly before the award ceremony and wishes her good luck. Laura then reveals to her that the victory would mean more to her than anything and means more to her than Destiny could imagine. Laura gives her to understand that she has few opportunities to excel otherwise and that Destiny, however, still has her whole life ahead of her to realize her talent and potential.

Despite the destruction of the sculpture, Destiny wins. The jury rated the destruction as “art in butter” and said that the “sad face made from melted butter” gave the figure a special depth. Destiny then goes to Laura, hugs her and says that this competition is not everything in her life. Destiny goes on and even wins the state competition. The jury there praised the "fearful research into postnatal abandonment" of her figure. Destiny is later adopted by the Emmets while Laura runs for governor.

reception

The reviews of Alles in Butter were mixed. The film-dienst judged: “A comedy that deals with American political excesses of all stripes, but remains quite good in its satirical means. Thanks to excellent actors, it is still very entertaining. ” Filmstarts editor Melanie Lauer summed up:“ The idea is good, but there is a lack of implementation. Jim Field Smith shows with 'Butter' how a mature political power struggle can also take place in the realms of the little man, but with his exaggerated and implausibly constructed competition he overshoots his goal. The satirical core, which is successful in moments, loses a lot of wit and strength. ”Zeba Blay from Slantmagazine saw it similarly:“ 'Butter', apparently intended as a shrewd political satire, turns out to be a bit sloppy and difficult to define. ”

Boxoffice Editor Pete Hammond gave it a positive verdict: "A razor-sharp script and Jennifer Garner's amusing role make this cynical film about the national left-wing and right wing struggle really laughable." It awarded 3½ stars out of 5. The New York Post describes Alles in Butter as "another one of those indie comedies that infuriate themselves and deal with the supposed stupidity of Americans from the Midwest."
