The Altamont Speedway , even Altamont Motorsports Park , Altamont Raceway , Altamont Raceway Park or Altamont Raceway Park and Arena was a motor racing - track in Alameda County in Northern California , located between the cities of Tracy and Livermore . The distances to the larger cities in California are (as the crow flies): to the west of San Francisco , 76 km; in the southwest of San José , 54 km; in southeast Los Angeles , 300 mi.
The area, named after the nearby Altamont Pass , opened on July 22nd, 1966 and consists of a number of different racetracks that hosted racing events. The most famous of these events was the NASCAR Camping World West Series in 2008 .
The Altamont Speedway gained notoriety as the venue for the Altamont Free Concert , where a concert-goer was stabbed to death during a performance by the Rolling Stones in 1969.
In 2008 the speedway was closed.
