The Old Bürg is an Outbound High Middle Spur castle on 251  m above sea level. NN near Möckmühl in the Heilbronn district in northern Baden-Württemberg .

Geographical location

The Alte Bürg is located on a mountain spur between Seckach and Hannackerklinge, about one kilometer northwest of the center of Möckmühl. No wall remains of the complex can be seen above ground, but the artificial neck ditch that separates the Burgstall from the rest of the plateau is still clearly visible in the terrain .

history

The dating of the complex, which was already known in the 19th century, is mainly based on the large number of ceramic shards that were found in the Burgstall during excavations between 1962 and 1964. The sherds are dated between 1150 and 1250. No Gothic ceramics were found, so the castle was probably abandoned by 1300. Four silver coins found were also used at the time of Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa or Heinrich VI. and confirm the dating. Other finds include hollow bricks, arrowheads, knives, nails, chain links and a Romanesque column warrior .

According to the current state of research, the Alte Bürg is the seat of the former Möckmühl local nobility, d. H. of the Lords of Möckmühl , while Möckmühl Castle , which is still preserved today, was the seat of the Lords of Dürn in the high Middle Ages . The the Old Bürg belonging Burgweiler was probably the Outbound also Old City in the valley east of the castle stables. The decline of the castle is probably related to the disappearance of the Lords of Möckmühl, who can only be found elsewhere in the 14th century.
