Built on the water is the fifth studio album by the hip hop group Fettes Brot . It was released on March 21, 2005 as the first album by their own record company Fettes Brot Schallplatten GmbH . The pre- single Emanuela was awarded a gold record in Germany and Austria. The album itself also received a gold record in Germany. It was the second best-placed album in the German charts until 2009.

Origin and production

When the contract with the Yo Mama label expired and another album was due to be produced, the band weighed the pros and cons of a contract with a major label and then decided to found their own label, which they called Fettes Brot Schallplatten GmbH called.

At the beginning of the album planning, the band wanted to record a soul album that should touch the listener emotionally with thoughtful lyrics. At the end of the recording, however, from the point of view of the band, a mixture of mainly profound songs and party songs emerged.

Half of the album was produced by the members of Fettes Brot ; other productions came z. B. from DJ exel. Pauly and Arne Diedrichson. The band worked with various singers, but not, according to Boris Lauterbach, like many American rappers, having female soul singers write a hit refrain for them. Alex Prince, J-Luv and Pascal Finkenauer are guests on the album.

The recordings lasted a year; then Fettes Brot selected ten titles that they believed were of high quality and represented the planned musical direction of the new label. The album was mixed by Sebastian Hackert alias Sebi Professionell von Deichkind , executive producer was André Luth, it was mastered by Chris Gehringer (Serling Sound). The album was distributed in Germany by Indigo , in Austria by Hoanzl and in Switzerland by music distribution .

The album was released as a limited edition in an exclusive digipak with CD-ROM extras, as a normal edition in a plastic sleeve and on vinyl ; the release of the record was delayed by two weeks. The photos for the CD show fat bread in the port of Hamburg and an empty port basin. The pictures were taken by Jan-Christoph Schultchen; Felix Schlüter designed the cover.

To promote the album , the band organized a concert in cooperation with the private radio station energy 97.1 on April 1, 2005 at 7:00 am in the shopping center of Hamburg Central Station .

Meaning of the album title

According to Björn Warns, the title of the album indicates the origin of the band members as well as the place where the label Fettes Brot Schallplatten GmbH was founded in Hamburg and the associated proximity to the sea. He also hinted at the emotional background of some of the lyrics alluding to the original planning of a soul album. The band still felt on unsafe ground with the new record company.

Music genre

Fettes Brot attaches great importance to not assigning their songs to the genre hip-hop alone, as their music is based on a mixture of Latin , soul, hip-hop and rock music across all genre boundaries. Nevertheless, hip-hop forms the basis, as the songs continue to use spoken vocals and only the hooklines are partially sung. The inspiration from the music of foreign countries plays a major role; For example, Boris Lauterbach was inspired to Emanuela by a vacation in Brazil. For the title On Days Like These , samples of well-known musical works by other artists, such as B. Falcos Jeanny used.

For the song Yasmin , the text was first created, inspired by the saying “everyone was in love with” - the girl symbolizes the first crush, childhood love and the fear of being rejected. The same applies to Lauterbach , who, from the band's point of view, thematizes the system of thoughts and values and their errors. Cuba , on the other hand, is about revolutionary consciousness and the attempt to change something, as well as failure in the end. The melody contains Latin notes and acoustic guitars .

Wrong Decision is a self-deprecating song about everything the band members do not want. The trend setting is addressed , the emulation of current trends such as fashion and cosmetic surgery.

As always , the arrangement includes a choir. In Most of My Enemies , Fettes Brot humorous retaliation for Kool Savas and his diss from over six years ago. You still have to practice and with further verbal attacks from him. The song is supposed to be aimed especially at the new (younger) generation of rap. Musically, the piece contains an arrangement by Thies Mynther , who contributed the digital wood and brass instruments.

The band itself describes their album as lyrically impartial, but more serious than its predecessors.

Single releases

Emanuela

The single Emanuela was released on February 14, 2005, a month and a half before the album Am Wasser built . The song is about a girl all boys are in love with, but none can have. The text is about a crazy / unfulfilled and romantic love. The band took part with the song in Stefan Raab's Bundesvision Song Contest , where they took second place. Emanuela became a hit , with the result that the single was represented in the German single charts for 22 weeks without interruption and was awarded a gold record in Germany and Austria.

On days like these

The song, which is a mixture of hip-hop and soul, was released as the second single on August 29, 2005 and was recorded together with Pascal Finkenauer. It is about the media coverage of wars and how people who only know something like this from the news perceive it, for example, that they become emotionally numb to the cruel images, etc. a. also because no one can tell them why there is so much atrocity. The sample is taken from the piece Jeanny by the Austrian musician Falco . The refrain was performed by Pascal Finkenauer. The video for the single was shot by Warwick and Häring in a housing estate near Berlin. In the video, tanks take on the role of cars and buses. They were subsequently incorporated digitally into the individual scenes. Both Finkenauer and DJ Pauli can also be seen in the video. The single was released on CD with two versions of the song, as well as Was In Der Zeitung Steht and Big Bad Boris (Lauterbach remake). The vinyl maxi single was published with four different versions of the single and the titles Was In Der Zeitung Steht , Big Bad Boris (Lauterbach Remake), Big Bad Boris (Lauterbach Sprachlos) and Was nicht In Der Zeitung Steht . The single was in the single charts for 26 weeks.

Is that supposed to be all?

The soul song is about a single mother and her financial situation. The socially critical, serious text is not directly related to an economic crisis or the Hartz IV labor market reform , as there were comparable social problems before Hartz IV. Sven Waje contributes the guitar parts for this song. The single was released both on CD and as a vinyl maxi single. Both versions also contain the song Love, Faith, Hope in a normal version, as well as an instrumental version.

Tour and year-end / charity concert

Fettes Brot 2006 in the Cologne Youth Park

The Tour 2005 built on the water started on April 12, 2005 and led not only to cities in Germany, but also to Austria and Switzerland. The band was accompanied by DJ exel. Pauli, Arne Diedrichson, Pascal Finkenauer, the singer Emel from Zurich and J-Luv. The preliminary program took Fiva & Radrum , exclusively presented their new album tour.

The tour and year-end concert on December 22, 2005 took place in Hamburg's ColorLine Arena in front of 13,000 visitors and was broadcast across Germany by radio stations N-Joy, Radio Fritz (RBB), You FM (HR), SWR / Das Ding, SR / Our thing, as well as broadcast from the music TV station MTV. Since a concert by Eminem and 50 Cent was canceled, Fettes Brot decided to convert the concert tickets of the two US rappers for their year-end concert for a discount of 10% in a one-week campaign.

On April 16, 2006 the band took part in the exclusive charity party of the Viva con Agua de Sankt Pauli project . Other guests were celebrity chef Tim Mälzer , Elton, and the players from FC St. Pauli . The project was launched by FC St. Pauli player Benjamin Adrion together with Welthungerhilfe and is committed to clean drinking water in other parts of the world. At the time of the party, the project dealt with the water supply in 120 kindergartens in Cuba .
The tickets for the party could not be bought, but only won by SMS competition, to which there was also a competition in which there was a DVD car radio and a navigation device to be won.
At this event, a tour documentary film “Am Wasser built 2005” was presented and the band itself performed as a gay girl sound system .
Fettes Brot announced on April 28th that 6,000 euros had been raised and that 16 Cuban kindergartens could be supplied with clean drinking water.

Misinformation about The Dome and the ÖVP

The band distances itself from the allegedly planned appearance at The Dome in Salzburg in February 2005, because in the run-up to the event, posters were published advertising the band's appearance. Fettes Brot never intended to take part in this event.
Another undesirable occurrence occurred at a festival where the band was photographed with two gentlemen, on the assumption that these were the local organizers. However, these belonged to the Austrian People's Party and the picture appeared in the Lower Austrian edition of the party booklet. Fettes Brot never gave permission to publish the picture and expressly distances itself from this party because it enabled Jörg Haider to “take part in the Austrian government”.

success

The album and the single Emanuela were each awarded the golden record in Germany.

In Austria, where the single Emanuela was placed highest in the charts, Fettes Brot was also honored with the golden record.
The band received various awards from Bravo Otto in the year the album was released and won the
Man of the Year 2005 category for best musician from GQ magazine . The band received a 1Live crown for Emanuela .

Was awarded Fettes Brot and also with the music award Comet "Best Band" and Emanuela as "Best Song".

The album was in the album charts for a total of 38 weeks. It rose to number 4 on April 4, 2005, was in the charts for thirteen weeks, and eight weeks after it left the chart, it entered the charts again for 16 weeks on August 22, 2005. It returned to the charts for another seven weeks on December 19, 2005, and for the last time for two weeks on March 27, 2006.

Reviews

According to the Swiss website aightgenossen.ch, the album tells soulful, honest stories from life, which are provided with gallant, calm beats with a somewhat rocky touch, and pure rap tracks are missing, as the album is almost exclusively sung. Laut.de and various other reviews are of the opinion that one can see from the surprisingly calm, unobtrusive beats, as well as the adult lyrics, that the days of adolescent lyrics are over. Since the band doesn't care about genre boundaries either, the musical content of the album extends with borrowings from Latin, pop, soul, hip-hop, rock, and a slant towards R'n'B "across the stylistic vegetable garden". Above all, it captivates with grooves and melodies that encourage relaxation and enjoyment. The solid album not only conveys a "summer-sun-cocktail mood", but is also characterized by thoughtful themes and lines of text in individual songs. In addition to the party anthem Emanuela , only the title Wrong Decision, peppered with samples, would stand out. Jörg Utecht from plattentests.de found the album “too shallow”.
At rap.de, on the other hand, they weren't sure whether they should actually write a review of the album for the site, as they were faced with the question of whether this had anything to do with hip-hop or rap at all. Accordingly, the album performed poorly in the album reviews, speculating that all reviews of the competing media had merely copied the press release for the album. It was criticized that the album contained pleasant ironing music for mothers and that the topics were anything but new and creative. Joachim Hentschel from the German edition of Rolling Stone is of the opinion that the album is more for pop and soul fans and that the lyrics are rather banal.
