Deichkind is a Hamburg hip-hop and electropunk formation. It consists of the singer and MC Philipp Grütering and the MC Sebastian "Porky" Dürre. Henning Besser, alias DJ Phono, is responsible for the creation of her shows and works in this constellation under the pseudonym “La Perla”.

The band had their first successes around the turn of the millennium with the single Bon Voyage (with Nina ). In the course of the 2000s, her style took up more and more electronic elements. The best-known examples of this electro-based hip-hop sound are the three singles Remmidemmi (Yippie Yippie Yeah) (2006), Arbeit nervt (2008) and Leider geil (2012), all of which made it into the charts.

A hat in the shape of a tetrahedron has been the band's distinguishing mark since 2006 . This hat can be seen in numerous music videos (e.g. illegal fans , unfortunately cool , like my ass ). The band members wear it when performing live.

Band history

The band was founded in 1997 or 1999 in Hamburg-Bergedorf and initially consisted of Philipp Grütering, Malte Pittner and Bartosch "Buddy" Jeznach . The debut album Please Pull Through was released on May 29, 2000 on the Showdown Records label . Deichkind's breakthrough in the mainstream marked the single Bon Voyage (with Nina ), the video of which was frequently seen on MTV and VIVA . In June 2001 the rap combo recorded the single audition appointment alongside Sleepwalker as part of the "Hamburg City Allstars" . This placed itself in the German single charts for nine weeks and reached the highest chart listing with rank 44. The second album Noch Five Minutes Mutti was released on September 30th, 2002. With the single Limit, the band continued this first success.

With the piece Electric Super Dance Band Deichkind for taking Mecklenburg-Vorpommern at the Federal Vision Song Contest 2005 in part. They ranked 14th among the 16 federal states.

On May 19, 2006, the studio album Aufstand im Schlaraffenland was released on the Island Records label . The song Remmidemmi (Yippie Yippie Yeah) was released as a single and became one of the band's most successful titles. The song took 68th place in the German single charts and was among the top 100 for a total of 26 weeks with longer interruptions. In the 2006 Spex annual charts , the song was ranked 4th among critics and 3rd among readers in the annual critics charts of the Intro it took second place. The song was later covered by the band Fotos , by Nena on their album Cover Me , by Hämatom on their anniversary album X, by Pete Blume, by Rotfront , by Mambo Kurt , by Egotronic and by The Twang . Other successful songs that didn't make it into the charts were Electric Super Dance Band and I Anesthetize Myself , with Sarah Walker singing along.

Bassist Sebastian “Porky” has been a Dürre member since 2005, and since 2007 a permanent member of Deichkind. In the meantime, Dürre no longer plays bass, but writes the lyrics together with Philipp Grütering and implements them vocally.

In 2006, Malte Pittner had to leave the band because of private disputes. He has been the guitarist with Texas Lightning since 2009 .

In April 2008 Buddy Inflagranti announced his departure from Deichkind. He was replaced by Ferris MC , who played at Deichkind until October 2018 under the pseudonym Ferris Hilton .

Sebastian “Sebi” Hackert, producer of the band, died on February 21, 2009 at the age of 32 in his apartment. Since he was largely responsible for the musical direction of Deichkind, the other band members initially left it open whether they wanted to continue the band after the already established festival appearances in the summer of that year. Eventually they decided to do it. After Hackert's death, Roland "Roy" Knauf took over the role of producer.

At the beginning of 2010, Deichkind's first play with the name “Deichkind in Müll - A Discourse Operetta” premiered in Hamburg.

In the summer of 2012, the band had their biggest chart success to date with the album Command from the Bottom , which rose to number 2 in Germany. Several singles from it also made it into the top 100. The music title Bück dich hoch was placed as a single in both the German and Austrian single charts. Outside of the music scene, the title received attention when an employee in Rödinghausen received a notice without notice after posting an entry on Facebook that contained the video of Bück dich hoch . The employee appealed against this dismissal. The title of the song Leider geil has entered the youth language and was youth word of the year 2012 in Austria. The singles unfortunately geil and Bück dich hoch achieved gold status. The album, Command From The Bottom , went platinum in early 2014.

In June 2014, the single Ich hab ein Fahne was released for the World Cup , which Deichkind released with Das Bo . The track was released as a vinyl single , the edition was limited to 500 copies.

On December 4th, 2014 Deichkind published the video for the single So'ne Musik on YouTube . The album Level Why Why was released on January 30th, 2015. On the deluxe edition of the album, the song Self-made, which is a collaboration song by various German-speaking artists , was pressed. Included in chronological order are Kraftklub , Campino ( Die Toten Hosen ), Samy Deluxe , Björn Beton ( Fettes Brot ), Icke & Er , Bilderbuch , Smudo (Die Fantastischen Vier), Die Boys, Bosse , König Boris (Fettes Brot), Marteria , Jennifer Weist (Jennifer Rostock), Jan Delay , Nico ( KIZ ), Madsen , Sido , Alexander Marcus , Dendemann , Tobi Tobsen , Kid Simius , Marsimoto , Brutos Brutaloz, Dokter Renz (Fettes Brot), Inga Humpe , MC Fitti , Bonaparte , Miss Platnum and Sera Finale .

Concept and style

Texts

Characteristic for the band are the lyrics, which are mostly ironic-humorous or demonstratively “ chubby ”, but from time to time they are also serious or melancholy. On the first two albums there were radio play-like interludes, so-called skits , which were mostly re-enacted scenes from everyday life in Hamburg. So a spontaneous came MiniDisc -Mitschnitt on Hamburg's Reeperbahn before ( Because Mussu plata! ), Or appeal calls of disgruntled neighbors Günther ( Günther , Günther 2002 ) etc.

music

Ayke Süthoff traces Deichkind's development for Noisey . During the founding period, Deichkind were referred to as a rap crew . They are certified with the "[...] aspiration to bring German rap forward and to further develop it within the existing rap limits". But already the track Bon Voyage from 2000 is “a dancefloor hit with a distinctly electronic touch.” With the album Noch Five Minutes Mutti from 2002 “the question arises for the first time [musically]: Is this still hip-hop? In limit , the more likely does not apply, which is an electro track, with German rap "" 2005 becomes a turning point in the Deichkind history. Even in the original line [...], but already complete without Rap ".

Both Limit (2002) and Electric Super Dance Band (2005) are seen as decisive for the development towards “Tech-Rap”, as the band describes itself for their style . Sandra Adler writes about Limit in Rolling Stone : "The humming and squeaking is still arranged as a hip-hop beat, but it's not for nothing that the song still fits wonderfully into the repertoire of the later tech rap albums at the aforementioned live parties." Lu Yen Roloff writes in Der Spiegel “In 2003 the band got into a crisis after a member left, went into hiding, experimented with music and image - only to emerge in 2005 as the 'Electric Super Dance Band' […]. Instead of hip-hop, the new Deichkinder relied on electronically supported 'tech rap' [...]. "

The band continued to work with weird to grotesque texts and appropriate stage shows in which they appeared dressed in cling film, plastic bags, glowing green glow sticks and a lot of adhesive tape. Conceptually and musically, punk influences became more and more evident. The sound was much faster and more break-heavy than before, which continued on the album Aufstand im Schlaraffenland (May 2006). This was also evident in the remixes of the single Remmidemmi (Yippie Yippie Yeah) , which were contributed by the producer duo Egoexpress and Scooter . The band's penchant for experimentation was evident, for example, on the album Noch five minutes, Mutti , which contains the title Da Wo , which was recorded by Truck Stop together with country violinist Lucius .

Uli Knapp summed up at Puls : “The first in Germany to successfully combine electronic sound with hip-hop were Deichkind. And not just with her party-crashers 'Remmidemmi', but six years ago with her single 'Limit'. "

Live performances

The band is known for their shows. The show degenerates, as the band itself says, into a "children's birthday party for adults" with excessive celebrations.

The band appears on stage with self-made costumes made of garbage bags, foam tubes and neon-colored faces. The show elements mostly involve the audience, e.g. B. when band members crowdsurf on the audience with a rubber dinghy or drive through the crowd with an oversized barrel. The stage elements and props are self-designed and manufactured. For example, DJ Phono and Stefan Hübner developed and built pedestals, so-called omnipods , that move around from the very bottom for the show for the command album . A patent has now been applied for.

In 2006, Deichkind and the media group Telekommander took part in the Love Parade with their own car , and in 2019 they performed at Fridays For Future in Hamburg.
