history

After Napoleon's defeat at the Battle of Leipzig at the end of 1813 , the allied armies (Russia, Prussia, Austria) marched towards France. In disregard of Swiss neutrality allowed Basel 1814 80,000 soldiers crossing the middle bridge and the march through the former Bishopric of Basel to fight against Napoleon's army. This gesture was not forgotten at the Congress of Vienna and, under certain conditions, brought the Basel stand to the incorporation of the nine Catholic villages of Birseck .

In Vienna in 1815, the victorious powers first had to elect a new ruler over the abandoned prince-bishopric who could militarily defend the gates and the passes . It was precisely this area that the French used in 1797 as a pretext for invading Switzerland. Basel was not suitable for this. Only Bern had the necessary military power. In addition, Bern and Biel and the southern Jurassic valleys were burggled .

The Aargau and Vaud that Bern had already lost 1803've been through, Act of Mediation recognized as cantons, and the question of compensation Berns seemed secondary. In 1815 the rule of Pfeffingen had not existed for more than twenty years. It would have made little sense not to assign Duggingen and Grellingen to Bern. The Birstal forms a geographical unit up to Angenstein Castle , which for the Bernese was a strategic cluster and the gateway to the Jura .

Basel didn't want the Laufentaler. It was content with the merger of the villages of Biel and Benken with the Birseck. Similar to the Fricktal in 1803 , Basel did not want Catholics or too many farmers. As early as 1798, rural workers had set three bailiffs' castles on fire, and Basel was hard hit by their rebellion until 1833.

When the Jura became an independent canton in 1979, the Laufental, which had been isolated from the canton of Bern and had become an exclave , was given the opportunity to join a neighboring canton or stay with Bern. The cantons of Solothurn , Basel-Landschaft and Basel-Stadt were available for election . The selected canton is compared to the canton of Bern. After the first referendum on January 13, 1980, Basel-Landschaft (52%) and Solothurn (32%) were shortlisted, while Basel-Stadt (16%) fell. In the second vote on March 16, 1980, Basel-Landschaft (65%) emerged victorious; the “Action Committee for Solothurn” had no effect. In the referendum on September 11, 1983, when it came to deciding whether to go for Bern or for Baselland, almost 57 percent of the district's population voted to stay with Bern. But after it became known in 1984 that the canton of Bern had illegally provided “Aktion Bernisches Laufental” with money, a legal dispute broke out for years. Ultimately, the Federal Supreme Court demanded that the referendum be repeated, and on November 12, 1989, the Laufentaler decided with a majority of 51.7 percent in favor of belonging to the canton of Baselland. On January 1, 1994, after the Swiss Confederation as a whole had approved the change of canton , it joined the canton of Basel-Landschaft.
