history

Before the founding of the city of Anderson, the city area was inhabited by the Cherokee . After the American War of Independence , in which the Cherokee fought on the side of the Kingdom of Great Britain and lost to the Thirteen Colonies , the Cherokee abandoned their settlements in 1777.

The Anderson County area was settled in 1826 and assigned to the Pendelton District . Two years later, which was Pendelton District in the Anderson County and Pickens County split.

In the center of Anderson County a small town was founded in 1833, which was named Anderson Courthouse and later became known as Anderson . The name of the county and the settlement was chosen in honor of the officer Robert Anderson , who had previously explored the area with Andrew Pickens senior . The addition Courthouse (Eng. "Court House") is due to a log house in the city center that served as a court . This building was replaced by a modern courthouse in 1898, which is opposite today's Anderson courthouse.

The textile industry, especially the manufacture of cotton , became Anderson's most important industry at the end of the 19th century. Various cotton mills were located in Anderson , but - in contrast to many other areas in the southern United States - no slaves were used. The Pendelton Mill cotton mill, founded in 1838, still exists today (as La France Industries ), making it the oldest spinning mill in South Carolina.

In order to be able to supply the cotton mills and other industries with electricity , Anderson was one of the first cities in the southern United States to be fully electrified. At the same time, Anderson is considered to be the first city in the USA to be completely supplied with electricity from hydropower, as a hydropower plant was built on the High Schoals on the Rocky River in 1894 under the direction of the engineer William Church Whitner . The electricity was generated at Portman Dam about ten kilometers from Anderson and transmitted to Anderson, which was the first long-distance transmission of electricity in the southern states. The world's first electrically operated Egrenier machine was also operated in Anderson from 1897 . In this context, Anderson was nicknamed "The Electric City", which is still used today. The generators at Portman Dam were in operation until 1960. In the meantime, the electricity for the city and the surrounding area is generated by hydropower plants at the reservoirs of Lake Hartwell , Lake Keowee and Lake Jocassee as well as by a nuclear power plant ( Oconee Nuclear Station ), which uses the water from Lake Jocassee as cooling water.

In 1911, the city's Chamber of Commerce founded Anderson College (since 2006 Anderson University ), which is attended by around 3,500 students.
