Armin Zeißler

Karl Armin Zeißler (born March 14, 1922 in Limmritz, today's district of Döbeln in Saxony ; † June 6, 2014 in Berlin ) was a German literary scholar , editor and author . He was deputy editor-in-chief of Sinn und Form for 25 years .

Life

Armin Zeißler grew up as the son of a Reichsbahn employee in Limmritz (Saxony), graduated from high school in 1941 and was then committed to the Reich Labor Service . In 1942 he joined the Wehrmacht . Since he wanted to study medicine, he was deployed in Russia as a medical corporal . There he was taken prisoner of war in 1944 and met the later famous writer Franz Fühmann . During this time he attended a course at the Central Antifa School in Noginsk . In 1947 he returned to East Germany and joined the SED . First he lived in Grimma , later in Freital near Dresden and, after he had found a job at the German Hygiene Museum , from 1948 to 1950 in Dresden. He moved to Berlin in 1950, worked at the Information Office of the GDR government until 1952 and then in the culture department of the Central Committee of the SED, where he stayed until 1958.

From 1951 to 1954, Zeißler completed a distance learning course at the Academy for Political Science and Law in Potsdam , which he completed in September 1955 with the state examination. After a five-year traineeship at the Institute for Social Sciences at the Central Committee of the SED , he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD. In the same year he began working for many years as an editor for the literary magazine Sinn und Form at the Academy of the Arts in the GDR . As early as 1964 he was named deputy editor-in-chief. He held this position until the end of 1987. In the course of his service time he worked under the editors-in-chief Bodo Uhse , Wilhelm Girnus , Max Walter Schulz and Sebastian Kleinschmidt and compiled the content under sole responsibility in transition periods.

From 1988 Zeißler lived in retirement and devoted himself to his own and now mainly longer texts than was previously possible for him. On May 17, 1989 he received the F. C. Weiskopf Prize in recognition of his editorial work . In 1996 it became known that from 1984 to 1988 he had worked as an unofficial employee ( IMS) under the code name "Zeisig" for the State Security Service .

Armin Zeißler died on June 6, 2014 in Berlin.
