The 30-year-old Arthur has a massive alcohol problem and due to the lack of everyday problems he has no relation to reality. So it happens that he is drunk with his Batmobile chasing at excessive speed across the streets of New York and Bitterman has to sweep up the pieces behind him.

One day Arthur meets the impoverished city guide Naomi in Grand Central Station , who does not have a permit to carry out this work and is therefore presented by the police. Arthur helps her cope with this situation and falls in love with her. His mother is unhappy with this, in her opinion, unequal relationship and threatens her son to disinherit him if he does not agree to marry Susan Johnson, daughter of self-made millionaire Burt Johnson, which later serves the company her successor in the management of the family company is to be.

From then on, Arthur meets both Naomi, for whom he feels true love, and Susan, whose meeting his mother urges him to meet. Arthur arranges a candle light dinner for Naomi, for which he rents the Grand Central Station and hires artists to perform for her in the otherwise deserted hall.

Because his long-time nanny Hobson became seriously ill, he took care of her from now on and prepared meals for the two of them. Hobson, who now sees her work as completed, since Arthur can now take care of himself, eventually succumbs to her illness.

Contrary to his feelings, Arthur finally finds himself in front of the altar next to Susan. At the last moment he stands by his feelings and decides not to marry Susan. Thereupon he is disinherited from his mother.

Arthur continues to court his love, Naomi, and the two become a couple. Because it finally impressed his mother that Arthur got his way, he is reinstated as heir.

background

In December 2008, Warner Bros. announced a remake of the 1981 film Arthur: No Sad Child , in which Russell Brand would be cast. In February 2009 it was announced that Borat co- writer Peter Baynham was working on a script.

In March 2010 it was announced that Jason Winer , who was responsible for directing episodes of the American mockumentary comedy series Modern Family , is taking over the direction and will make his feature film directorial debut with the film Arthur . Helen Mirren , who previously worked with Russell Brand on The Tempest in 2010 , joined the cast in April 2010 as Arthur's nanny. Jennifer Garner and Nick Nolte agreed to play in June.

The film was shot in New York . Its production costs are estimated at around 40 million US dollars estimated. A first trailer for Arthur was released on February 11, 2011. The film celebrated its world premiere on April 8, 2011 in the USA and Canada. The film opened in German cinemas on May 5, 2011. On the opening weekend, the film grossed more than $ 12.2 million in the US, and total revenues in the US were over $ 33 million. On September 9, 2011, Warner Home Video released the film in Germany on DVD and Blu-ray Disc , which were given FSK-12 approval.

Evander Holyfield , the four-time heavyweight world champion, appears in a cameo as Russell Brand's boxing trainer.

In a scene in which Arthur searches for Naomi's phone number on his mobile phone, Katy Perez and Kerry Perry can be read on the phone's display, which when put together results in Katy Perry , to whom Russell Brand was married at the time.

criticism

Sophie Albers from Stern is of the opinion that the cast is top-class, but that the interaction between Russell Brand and Greta Gerwig in particular lacks the “magic” . Albers praises the portrayal of Jennifer Garner and is still annoyed about missing a "big cinema opportunity" .

Alex Todorov from Filmstarts praises the cast of the film with Russell Brand, Luis Guzmán, Nick Nolte, Helen Mirren, Greta Gerwig and Jennifer Garner. "The playful actors ensure that the predictable and tame Rom - Com does not turn out too staid and entertains well." In view of the financial crisis, however, the film's statement remains questionable, "in a few half-baked scenes, there is tame criticism of the managers' greed which one could safely have saved " . The dialogues know how to compensate for this, because they “are mostly funny and quick. Arthurs speaking parts in particular often vary at high speed between internal monologue and external communication. ” Todorov sums up: “ The bottom line is that »Athur« is a slightly above-average RomCom: fans of the charming original will not be convertible, but the conventional one is devoted to an entertaining update played remake anyway. "

The editorial staff of Bayerischer Rundfunk is of the opinion that the film has “too few laughs for a comedy” , since the “teenage affine RomCom is relying on the taming of the stubborn by the“ right ”woman” . The remake is a "listless image of the" original film "" . The camerawork of the camerawoman Uta Briesewitz , who comes from Leverkusen , seems “under-challenged” , while Nick Nolte “is allowed to push his massive figure through the picture a few times without motivation in Robert Mitchum fashion” and “the sky is full of violins on Theodore Shapiro's soundtrack” . "Only» The Queen «Helen Mirren runs into normal form."

Philipp Bühler from the Berliner Zeitung is happy, "the British comedian Russell Brand finds the perfect role in the remake" Arthur " , but Helen Mirren's portrayal is also " brilliant " . Nonetheless, Bühler regrets that the film only “ignites moderately” due to its “routine . For fans of Russell Brand, the film is still recommendable, writes Bühler: “However, the film is valuable for anyone who wants to get an idea of Brand, whom the Americans are very fond of as a decal of the somewhat faint Englishman. His shrill organ has completely erased the synchronization. But whenever Jason Winer's brave direction doesn't give him anything to do, his visual escapades on the fringes deliver the really big show. Russell Brand is not an actor, but his own planet, does not react to others, just revolves around himself. That is more likely to be called narcissistic than eccentric. But he's perfect for this role. "

Wilfried Hippen from the taz sums up, in the original film from 1981 Dudley Moore aroused "protective instincts in the audience [...], you literally couldn't be angry with him - unfortunately that's different with Russell Brand" . The scene of the candlelight dinner in Grand Central Station, on the other hand, seems “terrific” , and the cast of Helen Mirren was also successful and could compete with John Gielgud , who was awarded an Oscar for best supporting actor in 1981 for the same role . "Helen Mirren brings the same dignified distance into the role as John Gielgud, but underneath you can always feel the worried motherly look." Hippen sums up that the scenes with Helen Mirren and Russell Brand are among the better scenes in the film.

Roger Ebert judges for the Chicago Sun-Times that the casting of the main roles with Russell Brand and Helen Mirren does not come close to the original cast with Dudley Moore and John Gielgud , but is a good attempt. The dialogues he praised as a "witty" ( witty ), "fast" ( quick ) and not "plump" ( clunky ). Some scenes, including the scene in Grand Central Station, were "exaggerated" ( overdone ), but also "impressive" ( impressive ).

Awards

Russell Brand was at the Teen Choice Awards 2011 in the category Choice Movie Actor: Comedy nominated, but had to Justin Timberlake admit defeat, who for his performance in Bad Teacher Award.
