The Milan – Genoa line is an Italian line operated by the Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI). It is 157 kilometers long and is a main route. The passenger traffic is operated here by Trenitalia .

history

In contrast to the Turin – Genoa railway line , the Milan – Genoa line was created from an amalgamation of existing sections. One of these sections was the Rogoredo - Pavia line , which branched off from the Milan - Piacenza line and went into operation on May 10, 1862. Previously, on January 25, 1858, the routes Alessandria - Tortona - Voghera - Casteggio and Tortona - Novi Ligure had been opened. These established a connection to the existing Turin – Genoa railway line. On November 14, 1867, the connection between Genoa and Milan was completed with the Pavia – Voghera section.

The section between Genoa and Novi Ligure turned out to be difficult for rail operations and so on October 1, 1916 a new connection between Arquata Scrivia and Tortona was put into operation. Since then, changes have only been made to the route in the Genoa area.

On August 6, 1917, the express train from Genoa to Milan derailed at Arquata Scrivia station for unknown reasons . Three cars overturned, three more were smashed. 34 people died and 100 were injured.

The high-speed connection Tortona / Novi Ligure – Genoa

Since 1991, the expansion of the connection to a high-speed line , also known as Terzo Valico dei Giovi , between the cities of Genoa, Milan and Turin has been in preparation. In 2006 the project was approved by the Italian Economic Committee CIPE .

Corruption allegation

In Italy, 40 people were arrested on July 19, 2016 for connection to the 'Ndrangheta and for corruption (also) in connection with contracts for the construction of the Terzo Valico .
