BanG Dream! Girls band party! (Original title. バ ン ド リ! ガ ー ル ズ バ ン ド パ ー テ ィ! Bandori! Gārusu Bando Pāti ! , also abbreviated Garupa! ) Is a music and rhythm game by the game developer Craft Egg for mobile devices. The game was released on March 16, 2017 in Japan by the publisher Bushimo, which belongs to the Bushiroad company . The game has also been released in the People's Republic of China , Taiwan , Hong Kong Special Administrative Region , Macau , Singapore and South Korea . A publication in the west took place in April 2019.

Development, concept and publication

The mobile game published by Bushimo was developed by Craft Egg for the Android and iOS operating systems .

The cut scenes within the game take on the characteristics of a visual novel . The characters were all set to music by voice actors (here for see figures from BanG Dream! ) And are animated by 2½D movements. Live2D technology was used for the animations of the characters .

A publication took place on March 16, 2017, initially in Japan . In October 2017, Mobimon Inc. released the game in traditional Chinese in Taiwan , Hong Kong and Macau . Kakao Games released BanG Dream! Girls band party! in Korean on February 6, 2018, while the game was released in People's Republic of China by Bilibili on May 30, 2019. The English-language server started in Singapore on March 29, 2018 . A worldwide release followed on April 4th, one week after the server was launched. For a limited time, Japanese players were able to download an AR app of the game called Bandori! Garupa AR! download.

In 2019, the game worked with SCRAP Co. to organize the Find a Random Star event. This event was about the search for Kasumi's lost guitar, which the players had to find by solving various puzzles that were found within the metropolitan areas of Tokyo , Nagoya and Osaka . The event was based on Escape Room . This special event ran from December 4, 2019 to February 29, 2020. A number of new features were introduced at several events that take place once a year to celebrate the game's release: In 2019, an Overworld Lounge with new character interactions and animations was introduced introduced. In 2020, the groups RAISE A SUILEN and Morfonica , which belong to the BanG Dream! Franchise, were added to the game.

action

The action of the mobile game follows the story after the end of the first season of the anime television series and takes place in the same universe. The player slips into the role of an employee of the Live House CiRCLE, who tries to find bands for the Girls Band Party! Book an event.

In addition, the game contains several individual stories about the bands contained in the game, which among other things explain the background stories of these musical groups.

Playable songs

At the start of the game's global release in April 2018, more than 60 songs were playable. Most of them come from the franchise itself. In the meantime, several anime songs have also been added. The playing time of the playable songs is 1 minute and 30 seconds, with full versions of various pieces now also being playable. Various crossover events also include cover versions of Vocaloid songs, the theme music from anime series such as Re: Zero , Is the Order a Rabbit? or playable with the persona .

In addition, the international versions of the game also have exclusive pieces that can be played. For example, players from South Korea can play the pieces Me Gustas Tu and Time for the Moon Night by the K-Pop girl group GFriend , while the song Baby Shark was available for a limited period of time for players on the English-speaking server thanks to a collaboration with Pinkfong .

Gameplay

The player has to click on notes at the right moment that appear on the screen and come towards the player. There are also notes in which the player has to hold, pull or snip them up to a certain length. Yellow notes activate character lines during a piece. Before starting a song, the player can choose the speed of the notes and the level of difficulty himself. In order to complete a piece successfully, the player receives 1,000 life points.

In contrast to other smartphone games that have a stamina system, BanG Dream! Girls band party! the Live Boost! function, which enables the player to receive more rewards than usual when successfully completing a song and to continue playing beyond the stamina limit. In multiplayer mode, players can try together to get the highest possible score in a song.

By successfully completing songs and listening to conversations between characters, the player gains experience points that can lead to level up. By improving character cards, additional dialogues can be unlocked. Character cards can be obtained through a gacha system, a gamble based mechanic. The rarity of a card is symbolized by a star system, with the rarest level being four stars.

Meetings and Commercial Success

Hayden Moseley described the multiplayer mode in his review for the online magazine ComicsVerse as "revolutionary", as this game mode stands out from the crowd. Instead of competing against each other , the players try to achieve the best possible results together. He said that the main attraction of the game is the interaction of the in-game characters, who make the player believe they are experiencing a "playable anime ". He also praised the complexity of the game and described the game as "rewarding and fun". Moseley found the music and characters were worth discovering.

The release of the game contributed significantly to the growth of the franchise. Jessica Liong, also a writer at ComicsVerse, wrote that this is mainly because new groups and stories are constantly being added to the game that help the player identify with the characters.

In Japan, the game was downloaded over four million times within the first six months of its launch. In November 2019, there were already eleven million Japanese players. In 2017 and 2018, the game generated a total turnover of 31.8 billion yen , the equivalent of 282.5 million USD , sales, and fall to 2017 a total of 9.1 billion yen and 2018 over 22 billion yen. In terms of sales, BanG Dream! Girls band party! the second most successful rhythm game behind The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls: Starlight Stage and ended up in 15th place overall among the most successful games in Japan.

The global English-speaking server had one million active players within the first two months of its launch. In August of the same year the mark of ten million players was reached.

The game was awarded the Top Ranking Game in the App Store in Japan and the Grand Prize for Players' Choice Game and Attractive Game from Google Play .
