The area is 2282 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name Barpeta .
history
The district was created in 1983 from parts of Kamrup .

The population was 1,693,622 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 21.43%, which is high. Barpeta has a gender ratio of 953 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is common for India.
