The province of Bejaia ( Arabic ولاية بجاية, DMG Wilāyat Biǧāya , tamazight ⴰⴳⴻⵣⴷⵓ ⵏ ⴱⴳⴰⵢⴻⵜ Agezdu n Bgayet ; also Bidschaya, Vgaiet ) is a province ( wilaya ) in north-eastern Algeria .
The province includes the area known as Lesser Kabylia , it lies on the Mediterranean coast and has an area of 3404 km².
The population consists mostly of Kabyle is spoken, the Berber Kabyle . A total of around 917,000 people (2006 estimate) live in the province, so the population density is around 270 inhabitants per square kilometer.
Recently, there have been more clashes between the Berber-speaking population and the Algerian central government, and there have also been a number of deaths.
The capital of the province is Bejaia .
