Population development

On 31 December 2010, "was Official population " of the city Istanbul in Turkey after updating the Statistical Institute of Turkey 13,255,685. Of these, 64.66 percent (8,571,374) lived on the European side and 35.33 percent (4,684,311) on the Asian side. The area is 5,343.02 square kilometers and the population density is 2,481 inhabitants per square kilometer (in Berlin it is 3,800 in comparison). The population of the city of Istanbul rose from 680,000 in 1927 to 1.3 million in 1955. In 1975, 2.5 million people lived in the city. By 2007 the population had more than quadrupled to just under 11.2 million.

Although Ankara is the capital of the country, Istanbul remains the largest and most important city in Turkey economically and culturally. The city on the Bosporus, with all its problems (traffic noise, air pollution), like other cities of this size, fulfills all of the UN criteria for a megacity . Slightly more than 86 percent of the population of Istanbul moved from all of Turkey, mainly from eastern , south- eastern and central Anatolia and the Black Sea region , through rural exodus. The proportion of actual Istanbul residents, whose ancestors had resided in the Bosporus metropolis for several generations, is around 13.8 percent, while the remainder is made up of newcomers. Every year new gecekondus are created on the outskirts , which are expanded over time and develop into new districts.

The following overview shows the number of inhabitants according to the respective territorial status. Until 1914, these are mostly estimates that vary by up to ± 50 percent depending on the researchers' opinion. The noticeable decrease in population between 1897 and 1927 is related to the expulsion of the large Greek population of what was then Constantinople by the Ottomans and Turks. The numbers from 1927 to 2000 are results of censuses . The data from 2005 and 2006 are based on projections. The numbers since 2007 are the results of censuses. The doubling of Istanbul's population between 1980 and 1985 is due to immigration, natural population growth and administrative measures such as expanding the city limits. The population figures in the following table refer to the city within its political boundaries, without politically independent suburbs.
