The diocese of Innsbruck ( Latin : Dioecesis Oenipontana ) is an Austrian diocese of the ecclesiastical province of Salzburg . It includes the western and central part of North Tyrol and East Tyrol (see Tyrol ). For historical reasons, the border to the Archdiocese of Salzburg is formed by the Ziller River in the Zillertal .
It is divided into the 16 deaneries Axams , Breitenwang , Hall , Imst , Innsbruck , Jenbach - Fügen , Lienz , Matrei am Brenner , Matrei in Osttirol , Prutz , Schwaz , Sillian , Silz , Telfs , Wilten -Land and Zams with a total of 246 parishes .
The patron saint of the diocese is Petrus Canisius , who also worked in Tyrol from 1560 to 1580 .
history
The area of today's Diocese of Innsbruck belonged to the Diocese of Brixen for a long time , individual parts of the country also belonged to the Diocese of Chur and the Diocese of Augsburg until the 19th century . With the separation of South Tyrol after the First World War , the Apostolic Administration Innsbruck-Feldkirch was established for the Austrian part of the (former) diocese of Brixen, whose Apostolic Administrator Sigismund Waitz became Auxiliary Bishop in 1921 .
In 1938 the future diocesan bishop Paulus Rusch was appointed apostolic administrator. On August 6, 1964, the Innsbruck- Feldkirch diocese was founded and Paulus Rusch was the first diocesan bishop to preside over it from September 26. Originally, the newly founded diocese also included the federal state of Vorarlberg , for which, however, the diocese of Feldkirch was founded in 1968 . That is why it was named Diocese of Innsbruck.
