The BORCO BRAND IMPORTS Matthiesen GmbH & Co. KG is one in Hamburg -based manufacturer , bottler and importer of spirits and other, mostly alcoholic beverages. With a net annual turnover of around 200 million euros, Borco was the fifth largest spirits distributor in Germany in 2016 after Pernod Ricard , Diageo , Beam Germany and Diversa Specialties, a joint venture between Rémy Cointreau and Underberg .

history

The company's history began in 1948 when the Matthiesen family took over the Hamburg spirits company Borm & Co. and founded the Borco company. In 1972 the business area was expanded and the name was changed to Borco-Marken-Import Matthiesen GmbH & Co. KG. With the bourbon whiskey Pennypacker , its own product was brought onto the market for the first time. In 1974 Borco took over the Helbing distillery, including the traditional spirits brand of the same name, from Deutsche Hefewerke GmbH . In 1979 the company moved from Hamburg- Altona to Bahrenfeld , where the company's headquarters with administration and production facilities are still located today. In 1981 the distribution of Sierra Tequila began , which became the market leader in Germany in the following year. In 1993 Borco bought the gin manufacturer Finsbury Distillery Company Ltd., founded in 1740 . The family business is still owned by the Matthiesen family, but Markus Kramer, a non-family manager, was the first to control the company from 2014. Markus Kohrs-Lichte and Kay Engelke-Engfeld have been managing the company since April 1, 2019. The general partner authorized to represent is BORCO Beteiligungs- und Verwaltungs GmbH . In 1996 a branch was established in Vienna ( Austria ). Since April 2019, a joint venture between Borco and the renowned Kattus Vertriebsgesellschaft mbH has been founded, which as Kattus-Borco Vertriebs GmbH , based in Vienna, sells the brands of both companies in Austria.

Brands and products

The Borco range consists of almost 80 brands and covers almost all types of spirits. In addition, wines , sparkling wines and some non-alcoholic products are on offer. Borco has several own brands, some of which are sold internationally, and Borco also sells numerous other brands from other manufacturers in Germany and Austria.

The company's best-known own brands include Sierra Tequila , Sierra Antiguo Tequila and Sierra Milenario Tequila with a 75% market share in the tequila segment in Germany and export to 90 countries, Old Pascas ( rum ), Canarío Cachaça ( Cachaça ), Finsbury ( Gin ) , Alpha Noble ( vodka ) and Helbing Kümmel as well as Helbing Aquavit and Helbing Margarete's Doppelwacholder, some of which are sold worldwide. Sales brands

Awards

Jutta Matthiesen († December 25, 2016) received the award "Spirits Entrepreneur of the Year 2009" from Meininger Verlag for her instinct for trends and current developments. In both 2008 and 2009, Meininger named Borco-Marken-Import as "Importer of the Year" at the International Spirits Competition (ISW). In 2012 Borco received one of around 20 federal honorary awards for spirits .
