The Borgward B 2000 A / O (all-wheel drive with petrol engine) is a truck with 0.75 t payload from the original equipment of the Bundeswehr as a vehicle for passenger transport with nine seats or for the transport of loads with a flatbed body and tarpaulin. It was built from 1955 and was used from 1956 until the last vehicles were retired in 1975.

development

With the establishment of the Bundeswehr from 1955, the military requirement for a light all-terrain vehicle for personnel and material transport in the load class 0.75 t to 1.5 t payload was defined. It competed for Opel and Borg Ward with their own designs, which greatly at the appearance of the used during World War II heavy car truck light / Mercedes-Benz L 1500 A or Horch oriented.

Both the Borgward B 2000 A / O and the Opel Blitz A achieved almost the same technical results in the tests. The torsional behavior of the Borgwards was better off-road thanks to a two-part structure. Borgward was awarded the contract because of the cheaper offer.

procurement

Between 1955 and 1961, a total of around 6,400 vehicles were purchased at a unit price of around DM 15,000. Predominantly 9-seater Kübelwagen were produced and only a very small number of flatbed vehicles in the 0.75 t load class, plus a few vehicles in the 1.5 t load class. From 1962 to 1968, Büssing, as the temporary owner of the Borgwardwerke, also produced 168 identical vehicles for the Federal Border Guard.

use

The Kübelwagen was used as a vehicle for the company sergeant troop, fire control group or telecommunications team, as well as the military police force and as a supply vehicle; The vehicle was also used by the airborne troops. In the last few years before retirement, it was mainly used as a driving school vehicle.

When the last vehicles were phased out in 1975, this model did not find a direct successor. With the next generation of vehicles in the Bundeswehr, the second generation, new requirements and concepts were defined. When all -terrain vehicles were required, the tasks of Borgwards B 2000 A / O were taken over by the 1.5 t gl Unimog S 404 truck , later the 2t tmil gl Unimog U 1300 L truck . If cross-country mobility was not required, the VW 5- or 8-seater (VW double cab or bus) and the 2-ton truck with the Daimler Benz L 508 D were used. Retired Borgward B 2000 A / O were often used in disaster control organizations, the German Red Cross , technical relief organizations or the fire brigade .

engine and gears

The B 2000 A / 0 has the four-stroke gasoline engine designed for the Borgward passenger car Hansa 2400, an in-line six-cylinder with a displacement of 2337 cm³ (bore 78 mm, stroke 81.5 mm), compression 6.9, installed above the front axle : 1. Overhead valves are controlled by an underlying camshaft with spur gear drive via push rods and rocker arms. The engine develops 82 hp (60 kW) at 4000 rpm. The maximum torque is 16.5 mkp (162 Nm) at 2400 rpm. The motor has pressure lubrication and water cooling with a pump. The carburetor is a Zenith 32-NDIX off-road carburetor that works reliably even on extreme inclines or inclines. In addition to the Borgward B 2000 A / O, it was used in various NATO vehicles.

The manual transmission from ZF with a center shift lever has four non-synchronized forward gears, one reverse gear and a reduction gear for off-road use. A single-disc dry clutch type K 16 KZ from Fichtel & Sachs sits between the engine and the transmission. This arrangement means that both cardan shafts are of the same length. In road operation, only the rear axle is driven. The front-wheel drive is activated when required. In off-road gear, the through drive is rigid, i.e. without a center differential on the front and rear axles.

Chassis and body

B 2000 A / O with special structure

The car has a riveted ladder frame made of U-profiles, which is considered to be extremely flexible and allows extreme axle articulations. Two rigid axles are guided on semi-elliptical leaf springs. Drum brakes with a diameter of 16 inches on all four wheels are mechanically operated in most B 2000 A / O; only the last vehicles built have a brake booster. There is no power steering or hydraulic clutch support.

The structure is made of sheet steel. It is unusual that in the Kübelwagen it does not form a unit, but rather the driver's cab and space for passengers are separated in order to compensate for any torsion in the chassis. In addition, due to the separation on the same chassis and with the same driver's cab, other superstructures were possible. The passengers sit facing each other on two triple benches installed across the direction of travel. There is space for two more people next to the driver in the driver's cab. The standard version has a canvas hood held in place by tubular steel brackets and button-on plexiglass side windows as weather protection. Vehicles for the Federal Border Police, the police and other departments have what is known as a scissor roof.
