Episode list

With the first season began in January 2008 in the USA, the television series Breaking Bad . The season shows how the intelligent and technically very competent, but from the point of view of his fellow men rather inconspicuous high school chemistry teacher Walter White from Albuquerque , New Mexico, gets on the wrong track after being diagnosed with lung cancer . Walter finds it difficult to offer his pregnant wife Skyler and his son Walter Junior, who is suffering from cerebral palsy, the standard of living he is striving for and decides to produce the drug crystal meth . He wants to use the proceeds to pay for the extremely expensive treatment that his health insurance does not finance and to build a reserve for the family if he does not survive despite treatment. The young Jesse Pinkman, who just a few years ago was one of his students, becomes his partner in this dangerous world of drug dealing and organized crime . Pinkman is now working as a small meth cook and dealer , himself a drug addict and extremely impulsive, which leads to a host of problems.

action

Shortly after his 50th birthday, Walter collapses in the car wash where he works part-time because his salary as a chemistry teacher is insufficient. In the hospital, he receives a harrowing diagnosis: he has lung cancer and the chances of recovery are slim. For this reason Walter gives up his part-time job, but for the time being hides his condition from his family.

Through his brother-in-law, Hank, who works for the DEA , Walter learned that the manufacture and sale of synthetic drugs can generate large sums of money. He accompanies Hank on an operation that can unearth a drug laboratory and arrest a small dealer named Emilio. Walter, who has to wait outside for the first police access, happens to watch a young man escape. He recognizes in him his former student Jesse Pinkman and realizes that he is Emilio's partner "Captain Cook", whom Hank had mentioned earlier. That same evening, Walter visits Jesse and offers him to become his new partner. As a chemist, he has the knowledge to produce methamphetamine. When Walter threatens to blackmail him at the DEA, Jesse reluctantly agrees. Jesse asks Walter about his motives, but receives no answer.

Walter stole some containers and laboratory equipment from the chemistry laboratory at his school , which he needed to manufacture the drug. He uses all of his savings to buy a motorhome in which he and Jesse “cook” the drug in remote places in the desert. Jesse is initially annoyed by Walter's insistence on a proper production process, but is very impressed with the quality of the methamphetamine. He brings a sample of it to the house of the dealer (and DEA spy) Krazy-8, where to his surprise he also finds his cousin Emilio, who has been released again.

Since they suspect that Jesse would not have been able to produce such high-quality methamphetamine on his own, Emilio and Krazy-8 force him to lead them to the mobile home. There Walter is busy producing methamphetamine again. Krazy-8 wants to recruit Walter, but Emilio recognizes him from the DEA mission and believes he has been lured into a trap. The two tie up Jesse and threaten Walter. Out of necessity, Walter offers Krazy-8 and Emilio to show him the manufacturing process. Walter intentionally causes a chemical reaction that creates the highly toxic phosphane gas . He manages to escape from the mobile home and prevent Emilio and Krazy-8 from leaving it until they no longer move due to symptoms of intoxication.

Walter and Jesse discuss how to get rid of the bodies in the RV, but are amazed to find that Krazy-8 is still alive. They lock him up in the basement of Jesse's house. A coin toss decides that Walter should kill Krazy-8, while Jesse has to take care of the removal of Emilio's body. Jesse dissolves the corpse with hydrofluoric acid obtained from Walter, but does so, contrary to Walter's instructions, not in a plastic container, but in his bathtub. The aggressive acid eats its way through the bottom of the enamelled sheet metal tub , which ultimately leads to the partial collapse of the ceiling on the first floor. For his part, Walter initially has scruples about killing Krazy-8. He finally wants to release him, but then realizes that Krazy-8 is hiding the shards of a broken plate as a weapon (Walter recognizes this when he throws away the shards of a broken plate with a sandwich, it seems a bit strange to him, he pulls out the shards , realizes that a part is missing and finds out that Krazy-8 has it plugged in). Walter sincerely hopes Krazy-8 doesn't want to attack him, but when it finally happens he's not that surprised and strangles the dealer. Shocked by the experiences of the last few days, he breaks off contact with Jesse.

Hank and his partner investigate Emilio and Krazy-8's abandoned car in the desert. They suspect that their informer has been exposed and eliminated. When Hank finds the pure methamphetamine in the car, he concludes that new, professional drug manufacturers must have settled in Albuquerque, which he declares war on.

Walter's secrecy creates tension in his marriage. When Skyler traced a mysterious call Walter received to Jesse, her husband claims his former student was supplying him with marijuana. Then Skyler finds out that Walter has given up his sideline job, although he continues to cite it as the reason for his absence from home. Walter doesn't know any other way out than to tell her the truth about his illness and to portray it as the cause of his strange behavior.

His sister-in-law, Marie, tracks down one of the best oncologists in the United States to improve Walter's chances of survival. But Walter is put off by the cost of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which is over $ 90,000. At a party in his luxurious house, his old friend and former colleague Elliott Schwartz offers him a job in his successful pharmaceutical company, referring in particular to the associated health insurance. Walter, who feels betrayed by Skyler, proudly rejects the offer. Only after he has been forced to speak to him by the entire family does Walter consent to the therapy. He pretends to Skyler that he has accepted Elliott's offer to pay privately for the treatment.

Jesse uses meth to combat anxiety after the deaths of Emilio and Krazy-8, adding to his paranoia. For a while he finds accommodation at his well-to-do parents' house, but is thrown out by them when they find a joint that actually belongs to Jesse's younger brother, a supposed model boy. After an unsuccessful job search, Jesse and his friend Badger want to produce methamphetamine in their motorhome, but cannot achieve the desired quality. Then he comes back to business with Walter, who wants to use methamphetamine to raise the money for his cancer therapy, a connection that Jesse does not for long either. The two agree that Walter should make the drugs and Jesse should take care of the distribution.

Hank discovers a connection to his brother-in-law's school from the inscription on a gas mask that Walter left behind in the desert . Together with Walter, he inspects the laboratory's storage room, where he uses inventory lists to determine that material is missing. In the course of the investigation, the previously convicted janitor is arrested.

Since Walter is dissatisfied with the turnover, he urges the reluctant Jesse to contact the drug dealer Tuco, who has since taken the place of Krazy-8. Jesse offers Tuco a serving of methamphetamine for sale. Tuco is also impressed with the quality of the drugs, but refuses to immediately pay the $ 35,000 demanded by Jesse. When Jesse protests, Tuco beats him to hospital.

Walter suffers from the side effects of his cancer therapy. After he experiences hair loss , he shaves a bald head. He visits Tuco, introduces himself to the unpredictable drug dealer as " Heisenberg " and demands money from him for the methamphetamine that has already been delivered, as well as an additional $ 15,000 as compensation for Jesse. Tuco makes fun of Walter because he went to his headquarters unarmed, made demands from a bad position and even brought a new shipment of methamphetamine with him. Walter then throws a sample of the alleged drug on the floor, causing an explosion that shakes the house. Instead of methamphetamine, it is the explosive substance fiery mercury , with which Walter Tuco is now threatening. He then gives in, he hands Walter the money and pays him respect for his courage. He also wants to stay in business with Walter because his material is of the best quality.

At a meeting at a junkyard, Walter had four pounds of methamphetamine prepaid, but then had trouble keeping the delivery because the pseudoephedrine needed to make it had been used up. He and Jesse break into a chemical wholesaler and steal an entire barrel of methylamine . When we meet again at the scrap yard, Tuco is satisfied with the delivery. For a trivial reason, he then beats his henchman No-Doze to death in a meth intoxication.

Reviews

At Metacritic , the first season has a Metascore of 74 and a user score of 9.3.

“Walter White [...] represents an anti-hero who failed because of society. The fact that his son is physically and linguistically out of the norm due to polio is also not exactly what one would dare to address in German series. In Breaking Bad this happens in a funny and dignified way at the same time. "
