action

Albuquerque residents are still shocked by the plane crash. Skyler wants to divorce Walter after learning about his drug deals. Since both agree that they must hide the true background of the falling out from their son, but also from Hank and Marie, Skyler's behavior remains strange for the rest of the family. In particular Walter Junior, who in the meantime just wants to be called Flynn, blames her for the breakup. Walter refuses a generous offer from Gus and initially withdraws from the drug milieu so that he can take care of his family. Against Skyler's will, he moves back home. She takes revenge by starting an affair with her boss, Ted Beneke.

Jesse leaves the rehab facility after initially defeating his drug addiction. With Saul's help, he succeeds in buying his former house from his parents for a ridiculous price, which they had renovated in the meantime and then put up for sale. After falling out with Walter, Jesse decides to make methamphetamine on his own, which he wants to sell with the help of Badger and Skinny Pete. He uses the mobile home again. Jesse continues to feel guilty about Jane's death.

Meanwhile, two of Tuco's cousins have allowed themselves to be smuggled across the Mexican border into Texas, where they brutally murder a group of illegal immigrants accompanying them. The cousins visit their uncle Hector, who uses an Ouija board to give them the name "Walter White". Intending to murder Walter in order to avenge Tuco's death, they break into the Whites' house. But they are prevented from doing their thing at the last minute by the intervention of Gus, who is a business partner of the cartel for which the Mexicans work. Gus signals to the Mexicans that Walter must be spared for the time being because he still needs it for the production of methamphetamine and he cannot accept it if his interests in his own sphere of influence are not protected.

His manager advises Hank to resume his duties in El Paso. But he refuses, pointing out that he is on the verge of a breakthrough in the "Heisenberg case". He manages to trace a small amount of blue meth to a gas station cashier who took the drugs from Jesse as payment. Using the surveillance video from an ATM installed at the gas station, Hank can identify the vehicle type of Jesse's RV.

Walter is suspended from school after he repeatedly appears absent-minded in class and, when confronted by his supervisor Carmen, tries to kiss her. Gustavo intensifies his efforts to win Walter back for methamphetamine production by playing him and Jesse off against each other. Jesse offers his teacher 10% of all future profits for his agreement to have it produced according to Walter's process, but the latter refuses and tells Jesse and Saul that he will work for Gustavo himself instead. The chemist Gale Boetticher, with whom he works in a so-called superlab , which is camouflaged under an industrial laundry and in which, according to Gustavo, at least 200 pounds of methamphetamine should be produced per week, is placed at his side as his new assistant . The agreement is initially limited to three months and is expected to bring Walter three million dollars. He moves out of the family house and leaves Skyler with the signed divorce papers.

Hank checks the registrations of the motorhomes in question and finds out about Jesse. At the same time, he asks for the help of Walter, whom he believes Jesse provided him with marijuana. Startled, Walter contacts Saul, who advises him to make the mobile home disappear. Without being able to inform Jesse, Walter drives the mobile drug laboratory to a junkyard, where it is to be dismantled. Jesse suspects that Walter wants to betray him and follows him angrily, not knowing that he is being shadowed by Hank and leading him to the motorhome. Trapped in the mobile home, Walter and Jesse overhear a verbal argument between Hank and the scrap dealer, who denied the police officer entry without a search warrant . It is only with the help of a deception devised by Walter that he and Jesse manage to escape their trap: Hank receives a message over the phone that Marie has been involved in a car accident. While he rushes to the hospital to inquire about her condition, the mobile home ends up in the junk press .

When Hank realizes that he has been deceived, he drives to Jesse and beats him to hospital. The incident leads to Hanks' temporary suspension. Meanwhile, Tuco's cousins Gus demonstrate by appearing several times in his fast food restaurant that they finally want to get his consent to the killing of Walter. To distract them from this plan again, Gus gives the two permission to kill the DEA agent directly responsible for Tucos death: it is Hank.

At the hospital, Jesse announces to his visitors, Walter and Saul, that they will continue to make methamphetamine after he is released. In response to the objection that he is now more closely monitored and will sooner or later be caught, Jesse replies that if he is arrested he can reveal the identity of “Heisenberg” and thus buy his own freedom. Walter is troubled by this threat and pretends to Gus that the collaboration with Gale is not working to get Jesse to be his new assistant. The settlement stipulates that Jesse will receive half of Walter's share.

Tucos cousins ambush Hank in the parking lot of a supermarket. Warned at the last minute by an anonymous phone call, Hank is able to overcome the two Mexicans. He kills one and seriously injures the other, but is hit by several bullets himself. The whole family gathers at the hospital to stand by Marie. The latter reproaches Hanks' superior for abandoning his employee. Doctors fear that Hank will remain in a wheelchair. When Marie tries to find promising therapies, she learns that the insurance will not cover the costs. Skyler then agreed to pay the bills on behalf of Walters. To check the origin of the money, she claims that Walter won it at Black Jack after developing a mathematically secure game system. His double life as a gambler was also the reason for their separation from him. In the conversation, Skyler informs Walter of her suspicion that this is partly responsible for Hank's condition.

Meanwhile, Gus has the surviving Mexican removed in the hospital. He is threatened by his partners in Mexico, but also arranges their killing. Walter now realizes that Gus pulled the strings in the attack on Hank, on the one hand to protect Walter, on the other hand to be able to get rid of the Mexicans, whose deliveries he no longer depends on thanks to the powerful drug laboratory in the laundry. Walter lets Gus know that he has seen through his ambitions to dominate the drug market in the southwestern United States. The two agree that Walter will work for Gus for a full year, receive $ 15 million and at the same time keep Walter's family safe.

Jesse is dissatisfied with Walter because of the arrangement with Gus, as he could make a profit with the high-quality methamphetamine, which amounts to many times her share. Jesse deliberately gives false information in the lab in order to be able to sell the excess methamphetamine on her own. After a while, Walter notices the deception. Saul suggests that Walter invest in a nearby laser tag arena called Lazer Base for money laundering , but Skyler, who is increasingly becoming Walter's accomplice, advises Walter instead to buy the car wash he worked for years. She even offers to join the company as a confidante and to “tweak” the books. When Walter objects that the right to remain silent is ineffective for divorced spouses, Skyler informs him that she never submitted the divorce papers, so they are still married. Hank loses courage and does not want to leave the hospital. After a bet with Marie (if she manages to get him an erection, he has to go home, if not he stays in the hospital; she can do it in less than a minute) he leaves the clinic, but is still in a wheelchair.

Jesse uses Badger and Skinny Pete to sell the blue methamphetamine in his drug support group. At a meeting of the group, he meets Andrea. It turns out that her younger brother Tomas is the boy who killed Jesse's friend Combo on behalf of two dealers. Jesse announces to Walter that he wants to murder the two dealers who work for Gus. But because he wants to protect Jesse from the inevitable revenge of Gus, Walter reveals the plan. At a meeting, Gus forces a reconciliation gesture between Jesse and the dealers. But when Tomas is murdered shortly afterwards, Jesse seeks a deadly confrontation with the two dealers. Before the exchange of fire starts, Walter unexpectedly appears and brutally runs over the dealer with his car. When one of the two is still moving, Walter shoots him.

Jesse escapes and hides in the laser tag arena. Meanwhile, Walter wants to negotiate an agreement with Gus that will ensure his and Jesse's safety. This seems to be successful, but Walter is now under constant observation and is assigned Gale again as an assistant in the laboratory. Walter realizes that as soon as his assistant has enough knowledge of how the high-purity methamphetamine is made, it should be eliminated and replaced with Gale. Jesse, in hiding, advises Walter to face the DEA and act as a key witness against Gus in order to obtain witness protection for himself and his family . Walter refuses and instead suggests that Gale be murdered himself with Jesse's help. This would make Walter indispensable for Gus.

Before Walter can implement his plan, Gus' henchmen Mike and Victor bring him to the laundry under a pretext. To save his life, Walter offers to lure Jesse out of his hiding place by phone. When Mike approves the phone call, Walter instructs Jesse to kill Gales immediately. With the reference to his thus renewed indispensability, Walter achieved his survival for the time being. Jesse arrives at Gale's house shortly afterwards, points the gun at him, and fires a shot.

Reviews

At Metacritic , the third season has a Metascore of 89 and a user score of 9.5.

“In fact,“ Breaking Bad ”shows a shining, almost mythical America on expensive 35-millimeter film , as the photographer William Eggleston captured on Kodachrome in the 1950s . It is about everyday life in the province in its immortal forms despite all weathering, the diner , the housing estate, the airport, the mall . "

- Andreas Rosenfelder : The world

"Breaking Bad" is as good as a show on this subject could possibly get, but the subject has its drawbacks. I like it, I admire it, but I can't say I enjoy it. "

- Robert Lloyd : Los Angeles Times
