The castle Traunstein is a Outbound Spur castle on a spur at 590  m above sea level. NN above the Traun on the southeast side of the Traunstein old town (Mittlere Hofgasse 11) in the district of Traunstein in Bavaria .

The castle was built by the mentioned first time 1120 Lords of Truna (= Traun) towards the end of the 12th century to secure an important bridge over the Traun and was in 1245 named "Trauwenstein" as a court of the monastery Baumburg and 1361 documented as "Veste " called. The archbishopric of Salzburg and the Duchy of Bavaria in 1275 (both maintained a maintenance office at the castle ) are named as other owners . In the middle of the 13th century the castle complex was expanded and received u. a. a curtain wall . After the castle had lost its importance in the 16th century, the Counts of Törring acquired the rule in 1618 and expanded the castle.

In the course of the Spanish War of Succession , the castle burned down in a city fire in 1704 and was demolished. After that, the ruin was used as a quarry to rebuild the city. In 2006 excavations took place on the castle grounds , after which the castle courtyard was built over.

The castle area was 3200 square meters and had no special economic areas, which suggests that the castle primarily served to represent the ducal claim to power over the city.
