description

The nature reserve, which consists of two parts, is located between Bad Lauterberg in the Harz Mountains and Bartolfelde , a district of Bad Lauterberg in the Harz Mountains. It places species-rich limestone grasslands under protection, which lie on partially steep slopes of the southern Harz Zechstein belt that are exposed to the south . In places, rocks of the Harz Dolomites emerge , including the Dohlenklippen. Parts of the nature reserve are covered with bushes. An area in the area of the Butterberg is forested. Most of the coniferous forest is growing here , which is to be converted into near-natural deciduous forest in the medium term . There are several small quarries in the north of the “Hopfenbusch” sub-area .

Significant occurrences of orchids such as the three-tooth orchid can be found on the limestone grasslands . Furthermore, large willowherb, common cat's paw , swamp heart leaf and character species of the gentian shimmering lawn also settle here . For example, scabiosa knapweed and fluffy meadow oats settle on poor hay meadows . Well-developed crevice vegetation is formed on limestone cliffs, including rue and Ruprecht fern. The limestone grasslands are the habitat of various insects . Some of them are extensively grazed and mowed. In order to keep the grasslands open, measures are also taken to prevent bush encroachment.

The nature reserve is largely surrounded by agricultural land . In the west it borders on a wooded area. The “Butterberg” sub-area borders on parts of the federal highway 243 in the north, on parts of the state road 531 in the south and east and on the Northeim – Nordhausen railway line in the south , while the “Hopfenbusch” sub-area borders on county road 32 in the west and on the east the federal highway 243. The area can partly be accessed on paths. The karst hiking trail passes near the nature reserve.
