history
The territory of the state was shaped by the Maya in pre-Columbian times . Your former city Edzná is together with Calakmul the most important ruins in Campeche. In the southeast, on the border with Quintana Roo, lie the ruins of the Río Bec group (the largest of which is Xpuhil ), the most prominent feature of which is the so-called “pseudo pyramids ”. The Uxul settlement was rediscovered in 2005.
After the Spanish conquest , today's Campeche belonged to the general captainate of Yucatán , which was founded in 1617 in the viceroyalty of New Spain . It was ruled by a governor and was under the jurisdiction of the Real Audiencia of Mexico . With the independence of Mexico, Campeche became part of the Mexican Empire .
