Carthage is a town in Franklin County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 560 people lived there in 223 households on an area of 86.66 km².

Geographical location
Carthage is located in southwest Franklin County. The Webb River flows south through the town, from Webb Lake in the north to the Androscoggin River , into which it flows, in the south. The town lies in a valley between hills and mountains. In the eastern ridge of the hill is the 783 m high Saddleback Mountain, the highest mountain in the area. Halfmoon Pond borders in the southwest and Podunk Pond in the east .

history
The first settlers in the town were William Bowley and Mr. Winter. Bowley built Boley's Mills on the Webb River . On February 20, 1826, the area was organized as a town. Previously it was known as Plantation Number 4 Abbott's Purchase . Samuel Adams divided the area into parcels in 1803. Carthage was named after Carthage in North Africa.
