action

Two years before the actual action, the pretty Tes works as a waitress in a strip club. She skilfully defends herself against lewd guests, and she is also very adept at stealing wallets. The guest Ronny helps her in an argument with an intrusive guest and offers to introduce her to Mel. Tes agrees and Ronny brings her to Mel. At the meeting, Mel offers Tes to work for him in the drug business, which she accepts.

After the last job went wrong, Tes and her friends Dawn and Kara get a new job from Mel. Allegedly, a competitor of Mel is transporting his drugs through his territory. The drugs and money are supposed to be handed over at a remote diner . Tes and her friends should find out there who is behind the business. Tes, Kara and Dawn have been sitting in the diner for 20 minutes, but the couriers don't show up. The three then decide to use their weapons to obtain information about the planned drug deal from the waitress, as they are of the opinion that no business will be conducted here without their knowledge. However, the staff and guests of the restaurant unexpectedly also draw their guns. There is an exchange of fire in which Kara and Dawn as well as the woman behind the counter and a trucker die. In the end, Tes and the cook Billy face each other with their guns drawn in a Mexican standoff and ask each other to put down their guns .

Then Ronny enters the diner. He wears the uniform of a policeman who he shot dead on the side of the road when he tried to help him with a supposed car breakdown. Immediately after entering the diner he kills two uninvolved guests without warning, who are sitting at their table frightened after the previous exchange of fire.

In the course of the following conversation it turns out that Mel was angry about the failed last job and asked Billy to kill Tes, Kara and Dawn for their failure. The new order for Tes was therefore just a trap.

Ronny now unexpectedly confesses his love for Tes and claims to have always taken care of Tes. Only with the last order from Tes could he not do this. He tells Tes to shoot Billy so he and Tes can run away with the money Billy received from Mel for killing the three. Tes hesitates, but suddenly aims at Ronny and there is another exchange of fire.

Now Mel enters the bar. Tes is apparently fatally hit on the floor and Ronny is sitting at a table, drinking coffee and holding a bleeding wound on his neck. Mel sits down next to Ronny and tells him in the form of a parable that he knows that Ronny has betrayed and stolen from him and that the money for the murder of Tes and her friends is not in the diner. He then shoots Ronny. When he wants to leave the bar, he is shot by Tes, who is not dead, only injured. Tes escapes from the crime scene in Mel's car, with a bag of money in the back seat that Mel brought with him earlier.

Reviews

Catch .44 received mostly mediocre to poor ratings. The script was primarily criticized, while the actors' performances were presented positively. The film was often compared with the works of Quentin Tarantino , especially Pulp Fiction and Death Proof obviously served as stylistic models, whereby the Mexican standoff contained in Pulp Fiction offers a milder outcome for those involved.

The film editors of the New York Times complained that the film was not witty enough to entertain consistently and did not create tension, and that the audience was indifferent to the characters. The Hollywood Reporter judged that while the film gives Willis and Whitaker the chance to showcase their character acting skills in unfamiliar surroundings, there isn't much to recommend about the film. The German-language film portal Filmstarts stated that the film was simply not the cool gangster break that it was designed to be. Director Aaron Harvey lives out his passion for Quentin Tarantino cinema. Elements from his films alone did not make an instant cult hit, the work lacks heart, the coolness seems intentional. Overall, thanks to great actors , Catch .44 is quite entertaining. The film currently has a popularity of just 14% on the Rotten Tomatoes ratings website .
